About the Region
Wine is made almost everywhere in France except the cool northwest and portions of the country's central plateau. Despite ever-increasing competition from other countries, it remains the second-largest wine producer in the world, after Italy, and contributes as many as 8 billion bottles to the marketplace every year. There are almost 500 separate appellations in France, including the major regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, the Rhône, the Loire, Provence, Alsace, and the Languedoc-Roussillon, but many more besides. Some wines, especially for supermarket sale and export, are blended from the wines of different regions, and the dedicated lover of French wine will always discover "new" appellations and taste experiences.
