If you want finger-licking good barbeque then this family-run joint is the place to be. The barbeque specialties here are uniquely seared and slow cooked over coals in a pit located in the middle of the restaurant (It’s okay, most people drool as pit masters smother BBQ sauce all over the ribs). Succulent, tender, and flavorful, with big portions - who could ask for better?

Tips

  • As seen on Man v Food, this is the original Salt Lick, and the best BBQ around. If you're anywhere in Texas, make the trip to Driftwood for Salt Lick's mouthwatering BBQ.
  • Go to the Salt Lick BBQ, the original one in Driftwood. Skip the others (especially the airport one). Make sure to try the spicy barbeque sauce. Go HUNGRY.
  • get the spicy sauce
  • Go to the Salt Lick and try the all you can eat plate - brisket, sausage and ribs. It doesn't get more authentic than this.
  • Unless you're going to eat $7.00 extra in food, you'll be fine ordering the regular 3-meat plate. It's not all you can eat, but it is plenty of food.
  • Get away from the hustle and bustle that is Austin for a few hours and enjoy some BBQ (or super hearty veggie sides). Mapquest organizes a free BBQ bus every year at SXSW. - Erica Swallow
  • Eat a lot of meat. Don't forget the carbs, because meat without carbs is like marriage without the sex.
  • Originally since 1964 people come from miles away. Everyone who visits Austin comes here. This is only 7 miles from my house. Best BBQ in TX!
  • Cash only! But, they have an ATM!
  • Reader tip: About 30 mins south of Austin is The Salt Lick. It epitomizes Texas BBQ and you can bring your own beer!
  • At Salt Lick, enjoy slow-smoked meat to your hearts content. This restaurant offers a family-style meal with never-ending ribs, brisket, sausages and more. Seen on Food Paradise: Manliest Restaurants.
  • Best BBQ EVER. Instead of all-you-can-eat, I recommend ordering everything to share family style. And save room for dessert!
  • BEST BBQ this side of the Mississippi! Chow down on some ribs while over looking the beautiful hill country in Driftwood. But itll cost you: this little piece of heaven is 20 miles outside Austin.
  • Pack up leftovers just before the point of 'totally full' so you can have a piece of the most heavenly pecan pie...
  • Drive your pickup on down to Driftwood for some seriously good bbq. BYOB. Sit outside. Enjoy the sweet downhome feel of the Texas Hill Country.
  • try the lean brisket!
  • Try the fresh squeezed lemonade
  • Get the family style unlimited plate with everything you see here. It's an endless BBQ pit of deliciousness. Totally worth it - c'mon you drove all the way out here!
  • Why do they even sell dessert? Get the endless plate of meat and dig in, you'll go home fat and happy.
  • Cash only & BYOB. There's a dining room with A/C too...
