Pizza is a New York staple. People come from all around the world for a not-too-doughy, perfectly cheesed, thin slice of New York heaven. It’s been that way for as long as we can remember, and as long as places like Melani Pizzeria keep popping up, it will stay like that for a long time.
This is a fantastic family-run spot in the Lower East Side that serves up a variety of specialty pizzas, fresh pasta dishes, and beef meatballs so good they could only be grandma’s secret recipe. And let’s face it, all grandmas have a knack for making a mean meatball.
Pizza seems like the obvious thing to order here. Start with a slice of the Chicken/Bacon/Ranch pizza and the classic Margarita. All fresh ingredients on a perfectly crispy crust.
After you cross pizza off your to-eat list, enter Melani’s world of homemade pasta (and what a fantastic world to enter). Make your first pasta dish the Pappardelle Bolognese: a plate of wide noodles with a hearty bolognese sauce. You have the option to add a meatball or two, so act wisely and make sure you get a double dose of ‘balls.
Next, get yourself a few freshly-baked garlic knots to soak up the excess sauce. No sauce gets left behind!
Feeling stuffed? Well, man-up and make room because Lasagna reigns supreme as the dish to order here. Homemade layers of cheeses, sauce, and those meatballs we’ve been raving about. Garfield would be so proud of you.
Although small inside, Melani Pizzeria leaves a big impression. Take a seat at the counter-top, or choose the high-top table by the window. The pizza ovens fire on all cylinders behind the display case, churning out plenty of food every day. You probably want to avoid the afterschool rush, which can be chaotic. The staff goes out of their way to make sure you’re satisfied, and the affordable prices make it a destination for anybody craving delicious food without spending an arm and a leg.
