Food Tank, in partnership with American University, is hosting the 2nd Annual Food Tank Summit in Washington, D.C. on April 20–21, 2016. 

This two-day event will feature more than 75 different speakers from the food and agriculture field. Researchers, farmers, chefs, policymakers, government officials, and students will come together for panels on topics including food waste, urban agriculture, family farmers, farm workers, and more. 

Food Tank recently had the opportunity to speak with Arlin Wasserman, the Founder of Changing Tastes, who will be speaking at the summit.

Food Tank (FT): What inspired you to get involved in food and agriculture?

Arlin Wasserman (AW): Realizing at a very early age that which foods we choose to eat and grow, and how we grow them, is connected to some of the longest enduring political and environmental problems.

FT: What do you see as the biggest opportunity to fix the food system?

AW: In the next few years, the elimination of antibiotics in both land-based livestock and farmed fish and seafood is a key to major change. Not only would this provide an immediate benefit to our public health and our ability to avoid and treat infections, it also eliminates the enabling technology for the most damaging intensive production processes.

FT: What drives you every day to fight for the bettering of our food system?

AW: It’s not a fight. The work I do ultimately leads to more delicious food and more successful business.

FT: What’s the biggest problem within the food system our parents and grandparents didn't have to deal with?

AW: Not knowing, or even being able to find out where our food was grown.

FT: What is one small change every person can make in their daily lives to make a big difference?

AW: Forget about once a day. Just try once a week to go to a restaurant or ask a friend to cook for you a dish that includes red meat, and ask them to prepare it with a bit less made red and just as much flavor. Engage others in the challenge and the change.

FT: What agricultural issue would you like for the next president of the United States to immediately address?

AW: Changing federal subsidies and insurance so farmers can grow fruits and vegetables alongside commodity crops on the same farm without foregoing public supports and protections.
