As many of us Americans were indulging in the madness that is post-Thanksgiving shopping, burger operators in other parts of the world used the time to unveil holiday menu offerings. In case you missed them, a few of the best are below.
Shake Shack, UK, Seasonal Menu
The American chain cozies up to its new British friends with a seasonal menu that will be offered from Dec. 10, 2015, through Jan. 16, 2015. The main components are an Alpine Burger with 100% Aberdeen Angus beef topped with melted Appenzeller cheese sauce and British free-range Wiltshire cure-smoked bacon, and a Maple Dijon Sausage with Jimmy’s Farm Cumberland Sausage topped with maple-Dijon mustard and crispy shallots. Holiday beverages include a Gingerbread Apple Caramel Concrete, Mulled Red Wine and Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate.
McDonald’s Canada, Holiday Warmers
Canada also gets a burger and chicken tandem. The Jolly Burger is a quarter-pounder with peppercorn sauce, melted white Cheddar, grilled onion and leaf lettuce on a “toasted, cross-split premium bun topped with wheat flakes.” Chicken Celebration tops a breaded chicken patty with melted white Cheddar, leaf lettuce, hickory-smoked bacon and a “creamy, rotisserie seasoned sauce” on that same wheat-topped bun. I can’t say what a rotisserie-seasoned sauce would be. Those are Ginger Cookies on the side.
McDonald’s UK, Festive Menu
Then holiday menu is an annual tradition at McDonald’s UK. This year’s specials include a Festive Feast Burger with sweetcure bacon, black-pepper cheese slices, red onion rings, Batavia lettuce and black pepper mayo on a toasted bun. The companion Spicy Chicken Winter Melt is a fried chicken fillet with Emmental cheese, spicy fire-roasted pepper sauce, slivered onion, mayo and Batavia lettuce on a toasted sesame-seed bun.
Handmade Burgers, UK, Holiday Burger
British chain Handmade Burgers’ holiday offering is the Dingley Dell Burger (which the English majors among us know is named for a manor house in Charles Dickens’ “Pickwick Papers”). The burger starts with a pork patty stuffed with sage & onion stuffing and tops it with cranberry, juniper & orange relish; tomato; red onion; arugula and mayo on a brioche bun. On the side are the chain’s new Cinnamon Ice Onion Rings.
Haché Burgers, UK, “A Taste of Christmas”
Not to be outdone, Britain’s Haché Burgers chain has unveiled a Christmas burger big enough for both Dickens’ Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge to enjoy. It’s a buttermilk fried turkey escalope topped with pork, sage & onion stuffing, salt-cured bacon-wrapped chipolata sausages and grilled Brussels sprouts, finished with house cranberry sauce on a toasted brioche bun.
McDonald’s Singapore, Merry Yummy Season
Somewhat surprisingly for a nation where Christmas celebrants are less than 20% of the population, Singapore tries a holiday menu. But the Beef Clubhouse Burger and Grilled Chicken Clubhouse Burger aren’t particularly new or notable. More interesting are new Truffle Flavored Shaker Fries.
