On the Fourth Day of Christmas…

Celebrating the Twelve Days of Christmas The Daily Meal-style, with a food carol about some of New York City's best dishes.

Technically, the Twelve Days of Christmas don’t start until Christmas Day, but we’re already in the spirit. To celebrate over the next eight days, here’s the carol, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ The Daily Meal-style, featuring some New York City dishes enjoyed over the years that we’d be willing to sing about.

The first lines of the song riffed on a 'Partridge in a Pear Tree,' 'Two Turtle Doves,' and 'Three French Hens.' Next up, 'Four Calling Birds. But what are calling birds anyway? Supposedly the Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; or their Gospels. “Calling birds,” are also said to be an Americanization of the English name for blackbirds, “colly birds.” Not sure about you, but we haven’t eaten any blackbirds lately. Instead we focused on chicken dishes from four restaurants whose names include a bird.' So today, our Christmas food carol would go:

On the fourth day of Christmas, my waiter brought to me (from top left) Buttermilk Channel's chicken 'n waffles, Five Leaves' roast chicken, Prime Meats' roast chicken, Pies 'N Thighs' chicken biscuit...

Chicks from four birds,
Three fried French hens,
Two desserts for two,
And Felidia’s pear ravioli.
