Burger restaurants don’t always get sufficient credit for the good works most of them do. They’re constantly asked for food donations or for help raising funds for charities and individuals in need and they almost always oblige. I was reminded of that looking over the Burger of the Month Specials on burger bar menus for August.
For example, Liberty Burger in Texas does a monthly Give Back Burger from which a portion of sales is given to a worthy organization. This month it’s the Magna Carta Burger (a coffee-rubbed American bison patty with jalapeňo queso blanco, cilantro-lime aïoli, lettuce, tomato and onion), with sales benefiting the ALS Association of Texas.
California’s Slater’s 50/50 chain does its share of crazy burgers but it also finds organizations to help. Their August Burger of the Month is The Bone Marrow Burger (a Brandt beef patty; bone marrow, pistachio & peanut butter; sliced blue cheese; balsamic reduced onions; arugula; shoestring truffle fries and garlic aïoli on a brioche roll). Proceeds will be donated to help the care of our armed service men and women’s pets while on deployment.
Chicago’s DMK Burger Bar has been featuring a DMK Club (A turkey burger with American cheese, bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato and mayo), with proceeds going to No Kid Hungry/Share Our Strength.
There are plenty of other examples, of course. But if your restaurant is looking for a way to give back, combining a Burger of the Month with a worthy cause is a great idea.
With the responsible-adult portion of the program over, it’s time to salute one unique and completely odd burger special of the sort that makes the burger industry delightful. We’ve all seen some strange things substitute for burger buns but Mixed Up Burgers in Grand Prairie, Texas, has the winner: two Welch’s Jamwiches between which is a third-pound burger. It’s topped with an apple slice. The “Back to School” Burger is served with potato chips and choice of drink.
And that’s just one of the Burger of the Month specials for August. There are more than 50 more worth checking. See them all here. There’s an idea for you here.
