When we heard Tom Ford wasn’t on the Fashion Week schedule this month we just knew the designer had something better up his sleeves. This season, Ford skipped the traditional runway show and instead released a three-minute runway music video to showcase his Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Starring Lady Gaga and a slew of gorgeous supermodels including Xiao Wen Ju, Aymeline Valade, Lexi Boling, Mica Arganaraz, Valery Kaufman, Lida Fox, and Kayla Scott, the video was a beautiful mash-up of fashion, music, film and dance—even if there were a few girls with two left feet.
Filmed by British fashion photographer Nick Knight, the film sees models disco dancing the night away to a Lady Gaga-recorded remix of the ‘70s hit I Want Your Love. It’s the latest in his series of non-traditional runway shows. In recent seasons he’s presented in unexpected locales like Los Angeles, shown his menswear line by appointment only during London Collections: Men, and even used his A-list friends like Beyoncé and Julianna Moore as runway models.
“Instead of having a traditional show this season, I decided to try something new. I wanted to think about how to present a collection in a cinematic way that was designed from its inception to be presented online,” he said in a statement. This is unexpected of a designer who, just a few years ago, wouldn’t even let photographers into his runway shows for fear of his designs popping up online early. Of course, he’s been more accepting of social media as of late, and is an Oscar-nominated director, so a video isn’t entirely out of left field. And, hey, if you’re going to release a runway video, Gaga, models and disco dancing is the way to do it.
