Santorini

In the heart of Greektown, Detroit is Santorini Estiatorio, an authentic Greek restaurant. Offering traditional cuisine centered around the celebration of life, Santorini  is serving up dishes that embody the Greek experience.  With a menu consisting of appetizers, Greek pizza, vegetarian dishes, seafood, and Greek specialties, Santorini has something for even the pickiest of palettes. A couple weeks ago for Tee’s bachelorette party, we gathered at Santorini for dinner. See how they ranked.

Allison and I decided to split two dishes which was good to try more than one thing, but filling.

Dolmathakia: Grape leaves stuffed with a mixture of ground meat, rice and spices, choice of lemon or herbed tomato sauce. Allison and I went with the lemon sauce which was light and added a slight sour taste. I am used to Mediterranean grape leaves so the Greek style was a little bit different. The grape leaves were huge and portions were definitely generous. The filling was spiced nicely, but it wasn’t as moist and saucy as I’d like.

Traditional Greek Pizza: Gouda & Mozzarella Cheese, Beef Bolognese, fried egg. The only thing I didn’t like was that the Beef Bolognese tasted more like hamburger. It had a good flavor, but it was really heavy on top of the pizza dough. The Gouda and Mozzarella was a good combo and added a slight saltiness. There just wasn’t enough of it and it seemed that almost half of the pizza was crust. The egg was a nice touch and the drippy, rich yolk added a nice sauce to the pie.

Service was good and our servers did a good job of staying on top of a party of 25. The dining room was clean and had a nice classy feel. Santorini has a nice, upscale restaurant feel without being overpriced. With happy hour food and drink specials, Santorini is the place to go if you’re celebrating a special occasion or if your just looking for a reason to go out.

Congrats Tee and Brian! I am so glad I was a part of your big day!
