Tips

  • When do I leave the Upper East Side? When I know Columbia University cuties (like our caffeine-addicted friend D) await me at the other end of the long journey West. I have priorities!
  • read the pretentious bathroom graffiti
  • Walnut macaroons--not the cafe's famous strudel--are the must-order here.
  • The Hungarian Pastry Shop has been meeting place for students and uptown writers since the 70s. This shop is the perfect place to pair a cup of coffee with a succulent old-world pastry.
  • Tip.
  • Get the Croatian Cremeschnitte, here incorrectly named 'the Napoleon'. Just like home!
  • Go when Columbia's out of session. No wait!
  • Order at the counter. Leave your name. Find a seat and the waiteress brings you your pastry and coffee. DIY free coffee refills.
  • eat the baklava
  • The Russian coffee is my favorite! My sister is hooked on the Hungarian coffee!
  • Nicest coffee shop staff in the world.
  • AWESOME, out of control pastries. Columbia students socializing instead of studying. Cozy with outdoor space. NO WIFI, which makes the ambience that much better but doesn't eliminate laptops entirely.
  • They serve my favorite plain croissants. Ever.
  • The shop has only a few traditional Hungarian pastries but lots of non-Hungarian sweets like baklava, cheese cake and mousse. Mediocre place with pseudo intellectual college crowd and a bit pricey too
  • This shop seems to be stuck in the past. There are old signs that advertise pastries that are no longer sold and graffiti by Columbia students from years ago. Still, the newer pastries are delicious.
  • Beautiful views of the cathedral when you sit outside.
  • Go to this small informal and inexpensive dessert shop and order the hot chocolate.
  • Little bit of old world New York. Don't deny yourself the experience.
  • Great place to play GO on Tuesday evenings!
  • A Rkczi krmes a nagymammra emlkeztet. Hangulatos, kicsit mintha az Egyetem tren lnk a Caf Alibiben :) (approved in hungarian ;)
