Foursquare Tips

  • Ironically enough at this precise moment in time there is no water (the merest of trickles).
  • go to rainbow falls
  • Hike up to the back of the falls, and you'll enter a fantastic jungle of giant banyan trees -- don't you feel you're in the Wonderland that Alice was in?
  • The river's named Wailuku which means "water of destruction" - people who wade in its shallows get swept away to drown in furious currents. And there's a monster in the cave behind the falls.
  • Climb the stairs, drop down to the top of the big fall and scramble across the lava flows to the small falls at the back. You'll find 10-25ft cliffs to jump with easy access in and out of the water.
  • Walk past and up the trail. The real treasure is the huge banyan tree!
  • Lovely waterfalls, and maybe even a kitten now and then.
  • Head up the staircase on the left and go straight through the tree canopy. At the end you will see quite possibly most massive tree in Hawaii. Definitely the most interesting thing at this stop.
  • Pretty but not too impressive. 30 yard walk from the parking lot. 10 minutes. Free.
  • No sign for it, just turn right into Rainbow Road. If you pass the hospital you've passed it.
  • The waterfall is pretty but nothing really more to it. Snap a few pictures from the various vantage points and be on your way.
  • Everything
  • Car break-ins do happen. Leave windows down and nothing inside. Otherwise, the falls are lovely.
  • So beautiful and it's right in Hilo's backyard!
  • Don't miss the awesome-looking banyan tree that you'll see if you walk a bit past the viewing platform.
  • Easy to get to, worth it
  • Beautiful, even when there isn't much water coming down.
  • Doesn't need a rainbow. Climb the banyan tree up top. Well worth the effort.
