We’ve seen a few hoverboard prototypes and concepts now, but nothing as slick as the Lexus Slide board. The brand introduced their fully-functional design back in June via the above video, which simply shows a skateboarder abandoning his wheels the moment the smoking hoverboard is approached. Thanks to the use of liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors, it actually looks like the board is smoking, which is just so dang cool.
Using conductors along with permanent magnets, Slide is able to magnetically levitate and look ridiculously cool while doing so. The board features many materials that Lexus drivers will be familiar with, like natural bamboo and the spindle grille that is so synonymous with the brand. And if you still think this sort of technology is way too far in our future to get excited about, it’s not. According to Bloomberg, a railway in Japan (Lexus owner Toyota’s home country) is already up and running, using the same magnetic-levitation tech as the Slide. Plus, Toyota has been hinting for years that they are working on a flying car.
While the prototype isn’t being put into production just yet, Lexus has promised that it will definitely happen. Now, if only someone could get in touch with Michael J. Fox so the real Marty McFly can get a crack at testing Slide out.
