We’ve listed some great-tasting, healthy peanut butter options that all have simple ingredients lists of one to two items. Click ahead to see our list of the tastiest, healthiest, most widely available peanut butter brands.
Adams makes peanut butter in crunchy and creamy varieties. You can also choose from their selection of organic, unsalted, and no-stir options as well. Be aware that the no-stir variety contains salt as well as vegetable monoglycerides from palm oil. According to Sage Kalmus, monoglycerides are commonly found in “some of the least healthy food products on the market, including baked goods, soft drinks, candy, gum, whipped cream, ice cream, margarine, and shortening.” Whether or not they fit into your diet is up to you.
If you’re looking for debatably healthy peanut butter-based treats, Justin’s is your brand (its Chocolate Hazelnut Butter is to die for). The company also produces a classic peanut butter variety that is made with two ingredients: dry roasted peanuts and palm oil. One of the benefits of this brand is that, while it does contain an added fat, you can find it in 1.15-ounce single-serving squeezable packets. If you don’t fear palm oil, Justin’s may be for you.
MaraNatha produces a good selection of organic nut butters. If you’re looking for our healthiest pick, though, it’s the creamy, no-salt-added, organic peanut butter. The brand uses 100 percent USDA-certified organic peanuts and grinds them twice to create a velvety smooth consistency, making the taste as pure and delicious as possible.
Once Again offers an unsweetened and salt-free peanut butter, which “is made with roasted Virginia peanuts and milled with the peanut skins left on. The skins show as speckles inside the container and naturally sweeten the butter to produce [this] Old Fashioned Smooth Butter.” If you’re really into it, consider buying a nine-pound tub (we’ll be honest, this would probably last us for not much longer than one week).
You may have gone to Peanut Butter & Co. for their dessert-like, fairly healthy, peanut-based spreads. Well, guess what? We don’t think those are that great for you. This company does, however, produce a simple Old Fashioned Smooth Peanut Butter with no added sugars or fats. While it may not taste quite the same as Peanut Butter & Co.'s other flavors (White Chocolate Wonderful or Cinnamon Raisin Swirl... yum), we assure you that it’s still pretty darn good.
Trader Joe’s, the producers of many delicious food items (and other exciting stuff), makes an organic creamy salted peanut butter featuring Valencia peanuts. This peanut variety is only grown in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, and you can certainly taste its unique goodness in each jar. Not sold on the organic movement? Non-organic varieties are available as well.
