The major cause of spring allergies is pollen, a powdery substance discharged by the male parts of flowers in order to fertilize other flowers of the same species. The pollen is carried by insects, animals, or the wind to an undesignated target, but when it doesn’t find a flower to fertilize, pollen can be a major inconvenience.

The microscopic grains can inflame or adversely affect the immune system of those who are allergic to pollen. The body interprets the pollen as a foreign invader, and responds by releasing antibodies to locate and destroy the offending substance. But this chain of events also results in the release of histamines into the blood stream, and this chemical is responsible for all of those pesky allergy symptoms.

Unfortunately, when it comes to seasonal allergies, there’s no reliable over-the-counter cure. Pharmacies generally only carry two kinds of allergy medications: antihistamines, which need to be taken in anticipation of an allergic reaction; and decongestants, which reduce the fluid in the lining of your nose. Thankfully, you won’t need any medication this spring. For those who prefer to avoid reliance on medications, there are plenty of foods that contain the compounds necessary to relieve your allergy symptoms and naturally reduce histamine reactions.
