Unique Twists on Classic Recipes from Mary and Vincent Price’s ‘A Treasury of Great Recipes’

This week, The Daily Meal’s Culinary Content Network was asked to recreate their own version of three dishes from Mary and Vincent Price’s A Treasury of Great Recipes Cookbook in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The three options given were an appetizer from Mexico (guacamole), an entrée from Italy (spaghetti alla bolognese), and a dessert from Denmark (Danish pastries).

Guacamole is the perfect snack to serve guests before dinner so they won’t ruin their appetite. “We’re against pre-stuffing our guests, and prefer to serve cocktails with a simple dip and crackers that are crisp but without too strong a taste of their own,” explains Mary and Vincent Price. Here are a few guacamole recipes to serve your guests at your next dinner party.

Vincent Price’s Guacamole aka Avocado Spread

This is a simple guacamole recipe that is packed with flavor and has a secret ingredient that you would never imagine: mayonnaise. It adds an extra creaminess that mashed avocados would not be able to achieve on its own.

Add a healthy spin to your guacamole recipe by pairing it with whole-grain chips or vegetable sticks. This light dip is full of flavor without excess calories.

Dansk Kage is a Danish pastry that’smade with loads of butter, which is what makes it so delicious. “This is just one short step from being puff pastry, and all the buttering and folding are what make it so light and flaky,” says Mary and Vincent Price. The CCN members came up with their own variations on a Danish pastry that you should try.

Pumpkin Puff Pastry with Kringle with Streusel

Kringles are traditionally filled with almonds, but this recipe took a different approach with a delicious pumpkin cream cheese filling. It is a sweet and crunchy snack that goes great with tea or coffee — the perfect mid-afternoon bite.

Spaghetti alla bolognese is the best loved pasta dish in Italy according to Mary and Vincent Price. It is a rich meat and tomato sauce that has many delicious variations. We have a recipe from our Cook Editor that you must try.

The secret to the rich flavor and beautiful, deep-red color of this sauce is lots of red wine. This sauce uses almost an entire bottle of wine and a long cooking time to meld the flavors together.
