10 Disney Rides From Your Childhood You Didn't Know Were Gone Slideshow

Over the years Disney has seen many changes, and rides that were around when the parks first opened are mostly gone now. Disney continues to expand on its theme parks and grow its franchise by creating parks around the world and adding to the ones that are already established. This year they'll even be branching out to the realm of music festivals by hosting an EDM festival at Disneyland Paris.

At Disney's Hollywood Studios there are new Star Wars rides and tours; at Animal Kingdom there are plans to open The World of Avatar; and several other attractions opening over the course of the next few years. But for new rides to open others must close. For instance, Tower of Terror in Disneyland recently closed to make room for a Guardians of the Galaxy ride, and Snow White's Scary Adventure closed in Disney World for another ride as part of the New Fantasyland expansion.

Body Wars

Body Wars was a ride at Epcotwhich is also home to some delicious worldly cuisine — where riders venture into a human body and are "shrunk down" for the mission. The simulator ride took riders into the lungs, past the heart, into the brain, and through various other parts of the body.

Discovery River Boats

This ride once took riders through all the lands in Animal Kingdom while showing them animals brought on board. In 1999 the ride was renamed and repainted, but guests were still disappointed, since most of what could be seen from the river could also be seen from land. The attraction was shut down later that year.

ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter

You may remember this ride for its creepiness. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter was a stationary 4-D ride in Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland in which an alien escapes from the glass casing in front of you, wreaking havoc on the building and guests — turning off the power, breathing down your neck, and drooling on you.

Mickey’s ToonTown Fair

There was once a cute village called ToonTown located in Disney World's Magic Kingdom. In the town you could walk through the cartoonish homes of Mickey and Minnie, meet your favorite Disney mouse at the Judge's Tent, and ride Goofy's Barnstormer rollercoaster.

Mike Fink Keel Boats

The Mike Fink Keel Boats once took you through Frontierland's Rivers of America. Based on the Davy Crockett television show, the boats made their way around Tom Sawyer Island. After a 30-year run, the Mike Fink Keel Boats closed in 2001 when one of the boats capsized.

Rocket Jets

Located above the People Mover station, Rocket Jets offered riders a quick spin in rockets with a bird's eye view of Tomorrowland. The ride actually replaced a similar attraction called Astro-Jets, which was less popular. Closed in 1997 for the New Tomorrowland renovations, the structure remained as a spinning sculpture called the Observatron.

Skyway

This lift took visitors from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland within Disneyland until it closed in 1994. It was incorporated into the Matterhorn Bobsleds roller coasters — the story is that the Abominable Snowman left the skyway buckets torn on the hill.

There were also two other Skyways that served the same two park areas in Magic Kingdom and in Tokyo Disney. Magic Kingdom removed the lift in 1999, and Tokyo Disney in 1998.

Snow White’s Scary Adventure

Although it is still running at Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland, you won't find Snow White's Scary Adventure at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom anymore. One of the park's oldest rides, it was shut down as part of the Fantasyland expansion project in 2012.

The People Mover

Another ride you probably forgot all about is the People Mover. Less than 20 minutes long, this ride took you around Tomorrowland — through buildings and all — in colorful train cars that never stopped moving. You had to jump in quickly if you wanted to get on board.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

This wound is still fresh, and some may not even be aware that this ride recently closed. Disneyland's Tower of Terror shut down in 2016 and is scheduled to be turned into a similar ride based on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. But if this is still one of your favorites, you can still find the ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, along with the park's new Star Wars rides.
