14 New Great (And Healthy) Snacks

Talking with the snack creators about what's next

An exclusive first look at the newest and most innovative launches from some of the hottest brands in the food business, the Snack Attack Editor Showcase was an opportunity for writers to learn more about some great brands.

This year’s event took place at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan and offered up tastings from dozens of companies.

While the term “healthy” is inexact — it may mean an item being low-calorie for some people and for others it may mean gluten-free — there were plenty of healthy options available at Snack Attack.

I spoke with folks from some of these top-notch exhibitors about the newest snacks to hit the shelves and what sets them apart.

 

What's your favorite healthy snack from your company?

Arielle D’Avanzo, Farm Rich: The protein-packed Cinnamon French Toast Sticks are a go-to. Farm Rich invented the French Toast Stick, and recently came out with a yummy bakery line of frozen products, which includes a French Toast Stick made with real cinnamon and even better — boasts 10 grams of protein per serving. It’s great for busy mornings when the protein can provide energy for the day.

Wayne Cherrington, Godshall’s: The Turkey Bites are my favorites. We make sticks and jerkies — and honestly, I have a slice or two of our fully cooked turkey bacon at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. as a low-fat snack between meals — but our Artisan Butcher Turkey Bites represent forays into new flavor combinations, and if you made me pick just one, the mango-sriracha flavor is my favorite.

Gabriela Grossmann, Bakerly: My favorite better-for-you Bakerly snack is strawberry crêpes. The filling is made with real strawberries, which are picked at peak ripeness. The crêpes are individually wrapped and perfect to have on the go. I always have one in my bag for a craving or a hunger emergency.

Mary Schulman, Snikiddy and Good Health: Either the Snikiddy Organic Mac n’ Cheese Puffs or the Good Heath Veggie Pretzels.

Robert Schuler, Giant Snacks: Easily the salty sweet pistachios! Although I do like the dill pickle pistachios, the salty sweet flavor is perfect for getting a little sweetness with a salty snack. The pistachio is such a healthy nut, and I like to snack on them to curb any mid-morning or mid-afternoon hunger cravings.

Diane Lilli, Farmer’s Pantry: Our line of Cornbread crisps. They are baked, not fried, have 10 grams of whole grains per serving, and taste incredible in either Original, Honey Butter, or Jalapeño form.

Kayleigh Westerfield, Hi-Chew: Hi-Chew, the chewy candy, is gluten-free, nut-free, and made with real fruit juices and purées. My favorites are the six original flavors, including strawberry, cherry, grape, green apple, mango, and banana, and they come in 10-piece sticks that are perfect for bringing everywhere.

Sheila Mains, Sheila G's Brownie Brittle: Nothing beats gluten-free dark chocolate sea salt brownie brittle for an indulgent snack that satisfies any chocolate craving for only 130 calories per serving. It’s crispy and portable. Perfection without any lingering snack guilt. We were asked for years to produce a gluten-free flavor—and it really hits all the marks. It allows moms with kids who have food allergies to offer a fun snack.

Mala Wiedemann, G.H. Cretors: Without a doubt, it’s the Organic Chile Jalapeño White Cheddar popcorn. I can eat an entire bag at my desk!

Cady Roberts, Hain Celestial: Terra is part of the Hain Celestial family of brands, so between Terra, Garden of Eatin’, Bearitos, and Sensible Portions, there are actually a lot of better-for-you choices. One of my favorite Terra snacks are the new plantain chips, especially the sea-salt flavor, which are made with coconut oil and have a light, not-too-salty taste.

Laila Banejad, Cucina & Amore: My favorite healthy snack from Cucina & Amore is the artichoke and roasted peppers quinoa.

PJ Roustan, Country Archer Jerky Co.: Made with 100 percent grass-fed beef, the original beef jerky recipe is without a doubt my favorite and apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so. (It’s our top-selling flavor.)

Helene Caillate, GoGo SqueeZ: If I had to choose, it would be our newest addition, GoGo SqueeZ Apple Raspberry Lemon Twist. That tangy twist of apples, raspberries, and lemons is just too good!
