Sam's Club, the membership-only Walmart subsidiary store, has been catering to budget-conscious customers since 1983. If you've never been inside a Sam's Club location, it's a warehouse shopping club known for its huge selection of food, clothing, home goods, and just about anything else you might be able to imagine, as well as its great values (check out our list of some of the best bargains you can find at Sam's Club).
If you're looking to pick up some meat for dinner at Sam's Club, there are a wide variety of options at different price points, which can make the whole experience a little daunting. Which cuts are the best and which are worth skipping? While some Sam's Club meat options are not worth the price, there are others that are beloved for their texture and flavor. Here are a few cuts that Sam's Club shoppers heartily recommend.
Top round roast
Top round beef comes from the back of the cow — specifically, the rump and hind legs. This region has muscles that are used a lot, resulting in meat that is leaner and less tender. While top round is not the most desirable of cuts, it's usually quite affordable and is a solid choice for slow cooking or braising. One Reddit user complimented the leanness, saying they "usually slow cook or insta-pot those guys. [M]ix it up with some beans, peppers onions tomato sauce and make a chili out of it."
Sam's Club Member's Mark Angus beef boneless top round roast has a rating of 4.4 out of 5, with one reviewer saying, "This beautiful piece of meat had just the right amount of fat and lots of lean meat which cooks to perfection. It was tender and juicy and fork tender. My idea of the perfect roast for family and friends." This cut currently retails at around $8 a pound.
Pork chops
While there may be a few food and drink items that you'd be better off not purchasing at Sam's Club, the same can't be said for their pork chops. Pork chops, which come from the hip-to-shoulder region (i.e., the loin) of a pig, are a favorite of many Sam's Club consumers.
When asked on Facebook which meat at Sam's Club is a must-buy, several users highlighted the store's chops. One fan noted that "They are thick and so good grilled...sometimes I think they are better than steak!" Others said that the "pork chops are beautiful at Sam's," with one customer noting that they don't love pork, but always enjoy the chops from the chain.
The Member's Mark pork loin boneless chops from Sam's Club are currently rated at a 4.7 out of 5. One review noted, "I've purchased these several times and I cannot believe how delicious with each and every bite. Super thick, tender, juicy..." They retail for about $3.50 per pound.
Filet mignon
Filet mignon is a renowned and rare cut of beef, making up only about 2-3% of the cow. It's prized for its tenderness, and the filets at Sam's Club are no exception. One Reddit user praised the high quality of this beef cut for the price, saying "As long as you're a moderately ok cook, these will melt in your mouth. Bring to room temp, season and grill or broil to medium rare to medium. Let [them] sit for 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into [them]. Perfection. You'll never buy filet anywhere else for these prices."
On the Sam's Club website, the Maker's Mark Angus beef filet mignon is rated at 4.5 out of 5. One reviewer calls it "tender, juicy, and packed with rich flavor. It cooked beautifully and cut like butter, making it feel like a high-end steakhouse meal right at home." These primo cuts of beef currently retail for about $20 a pound.
