Critic Roundup: Stephi's Furthering Boston's Trendiness
This week in restaurant news, restaurant critic Devra First reviews Stephanie Sokolove's latest Boston restaurant venture Stephi's in Southie, complimenting it as a "further confirmation of South Boston's trendiness." She describes the décor as "clean yet sexy," identifying its "red ikat upholstery, modern Morocco-inspired lamps, twinkly white tiles, and a gas fireplace." As for the dining crowd, "seats are filled with stylish, fit, fashionable 30-somethings eating salads and burgers. Navy-and-white stripes are a wardrobe theme. Post-yoga women still sport a radiant sheen as they sip olive-laden martinis," First says.
In Los Angeles, Fishing with Dynamite "blows away seafood lovers" with "tiny Peruvian scallops," which have a "penetrating nutty sweetness," "whole grilled sword squid with sliced chiles," and "New Zealand snapper stuffed with garlic, bok choy, and ginger and then tempura-fried," says restaurant critic Jonathan Gold.
In New York, restaurant critic Gael Greene dines at American Cut, where chef Marc Forgione has a "passion for everything bagels," a "yen for pastrami," and a "homeboy feel for Tribeca." Here, in what she describes as a "gymnasium of a space," Greene is "dazzled by the expensive, brassy Las Vegas look," the "black leather booths," and the "drop-dead lighting."
