12 Unique McDonald's Pie Flavors You Can't Get In The US
If you're planning a trip abroad, you need to figure out where you're going to eat. One way to find affordable, good food while abroad is to ask a barista when you're getting your morning coffee. Yes, trying local cafes is important to discover a country and its cuisine, but eating at an outpost of a worldwide chain can also tell you about what everyday people eat where you are. McDonald's operates in more than 100 countries, and in many of them, they tweak the menu to account for the taste of the people living there. Trying the golden arches wherever you are can be a fun approach to get a taste of both the familiar and foreign. One place this shows up is on the dessert menu in the different pies the fast food chain sells around the globe.
You could get a McFlurry abroad to see if the mixing problems with the treat plaguing many American McDonald's are international. Once you see some of these intriguing pie flavors, you may lose interest in testing international ice cream mixers. Many of the international shops include our standard American apple pie, but plenty change it up. We scanned the world's McDonald's to find the hottest, freshest pies. Some countries vary the fruit by season, so check to see what will be on the menu before you go, or allow yourself to be surprised.
MILO pie in Thailand
MILO is an Australian malted chocolate milk powder that is ubiquitous throughout Southeast Asia. Australia blends MILO into shakes, Malaysia pours iced MILOs, and in Thailand, McDonald's tucks MILO in custard form into its pie crust. The treat has a thin, flakey layer of crust encasing a malty, chocolatey cream. One Facebook reviewer appreciated that it isn't too sweet. While you're there, eat a full Thai meal with the Samurai Pork Burger and double up your dessert with the corn pie.
Taro pie in China
Taro, a plant from Southeast Asia with a starchy, edible underground stem used in all sorts of foods from sweet boba teas to savory cakes, is a popular ingredient in China. McDonald's taro pie holds a permanent place on menus throughout the country. The crust is extra crispy thanks to the kitchen's fryer. On occasion, you can find this pie in Hawaii (which is one of two states where you can still find fried pies at McDonald's), but if you want it regularly, you have to travel a bit farther.
Sankaku Choco Pie Cookie & Cream Strawberry in Japan
A part of McDonald's fall season lineup in Japan, this pink pie is full of strawberry cream and bits of chocolate cookie. The shape of this pie is a little different, instead of a rectangular tube, it's a triangle (which is what sankaku translates to in English). A regular sankaku chocolate black version is available as well, both for a limited time. A reviewer on Instagram calls the crust flaky and buttery (which the sounds of them biting into the pie confirms) and the filling comparable to a melted strawberry cookies-and-cream bar.
Heiße Kirsch Tasche (Hot Cherry Turnover) in Germany
We used to be able to find cherry pies at U.S. McDonald's, but now they are one of our most missed fast food desserts. These days, you have to travel abroad to find the classic flavor. McDonald's in Germany, the country of Georgia, and Azerbaijan are just three places with the dessert currently on the menu. If you were around when the cherry pie was here and you want to have a taste of nostalgia, you're going to have to book a flight.
Taro Custard Pie in the Philippines
McDonald's took its taro pie from China and added custard for the Philippines market. A reviewer on Facebook described the pie as flaky, earthy, creamy, and slightly sweet. On Reddit, commenters are saying the taro flavor is a little too light. The original poster liked it, but felt it could be sweeter. One diner wrote, "it's more like just a hint of taro rather than actually being taro flavored." Another questioned using taro and not ube, which is more popular in the country. On a different thread, a commenter who loved the treat called it "very earthy and warm."
Strawberry Custard Pie in Pakistan
Creamy custard and sweet strawberry fillings are piped side by side and encased in the pie crust for this McDonald's dessert. A similar version with a sweet crème instead of custard and an open top is available at certain locations for limited times in the U.S., but to get it with a custard you have to leave the country. You can find this in multiple countries including Pakistan, Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia.
Torta de Banana (Banana pie) in Brazil
McDonald's offers both apple and banana pies in Brazil. One YouTube reviewer describes the crust as crunchy and the banana filling as sweet with the perfect amount of cinnamon. On Reddit, a fan of the treat posted their attempt at making the pie since "It's one of the fast food things [they] miss the most from Brazil." They cooked bananas in cinnamon syrup and filled hand-pie dough with the resulting purée. Unfortunately, the homemade version wasn't as crispy as they remembered the McDonald's version to be.
Baked Strawberry Pie in Canada
Depending on where you live, traveling to try this pie could be the easiest trip. The baked strawberry pies in Canadian McDonald's come around during the summer, when the berries are in season. The baked method of it makes a difference, as most of the others on this list appear to be fried, which gives the crust the crispiness most everyone is looking for. According to a reviewer on YouTube, the crust holds back a decent strawberry filling. Some commenters on the review disagreed with the YouTubers low rating, with one saying it was "delicious," and another calling it "pretty good."
Cheesecake Pie in Costa Rica
Cheesecake pie may seem like an oxymoron, but there is an argument to be made that cheesecake isn't cake. In Costa Rican McDonald's, instead of a graham cracker crust, this cheesecake comes in a deep-fried, crispy pie crust. One YouTube food reviewer called it a "melty cheesecake." They went so far as to say it's "so much better than the apple version." Another reviewer on TikTok called it "very good" and liked it better than the pineapple pie you can also find in Costa Rica.
Choco Banana Pie in Indonesia
Take the banana pie from Brazil and add a piping of chocolate and you have the Indonesian McDonald's choco banana pie. A reviewer on Instagram described it as having a slightly stronger banana flavor than chocolate. They were unimpressed. A reviewer on the website Mothership who tasted the pie while it was in Singapore, gave it six out of five stars (plus one banana). The writer appreciated the contrast of flavors and textures between the chocolate and banana and the purées and the flaky crust. They even compared it to "being wronged and exacting revenge." High praise, indeed.
Strawberry & Yogurt Pie in Greece
I'm part Greek, so I know the power yogurt holds over my people. I eat it every morning. So when I saw that the McDonald's in Greece has a strawberry and yogurt pie, I was not surprised. The crispy crust is pink, standing out in the sea of beige crusts among this list. Oddly enough, this treat appears to be the only yogurt on the Greek McDonald's menu. One TikTok reviewer was not a fan of the pie, but was impressed with the crispiness of the crust.
Pastel Blueberry y Queso (Blueberry cheese pie) in Guatemala
In a deep purple, fried crust, Guatemalan McDonald's pipe in blueberry filling and a sweet cheese. This is a limited-time-only dessert, but don't worry, the rest of the time you can grab a plain sweet cheese pie. Sweet cheese cream is a pastry filling in Guatemala and the surrounding countries. A tourist visiting Guatemala posted a video eating at McDonald's on Facebook where the poster said they thought about the pastel blueberry y queso for the rest of their trip and picked one up at the airport on their way home.
