The Retro McDonald's Happy Meal Container That Became A Halloween Staple

Halloween will forever be linked to childhood memories of tromping around a neighborhood in costume, carrying a plastic bucket or flimsy bag that's slowly filling with candy. This was the night to harvest sugar to power you through the following weeks (or months, if your parents took control of your candy supply). For many, a big question was where to put the candy. Some stored them in pillowcases, and others in plastic pumpkins. In 1986, McDonald's helped us solve this problem by selling Happy Meals in plastic tubs known as both Boo Buckets or Halloween Pails. The initial designs were three orange faces: a scary jack-o'-lantern, an angry goblin, and a scared ghost. This became the bucket of choice for kids who wanted to trick-or-treat in style.

In 1989, the goblin was replaced with a green witch, and the ghost was turned white. In 1990, the ghost got a literal glow-up and became glow-in-the-dark. Over the years, the faces changed, and then the pails disappeared for a six-year stretch starting in 2016. Nostalgic Gen Xers and millennials celebrated the return of the pails in 2022, and rumors have circulated about the buckets' 2026 return. One Instagram post claimed they will hit McDonald's locations on October 20, which would line up with last year's October 21 release date — and we can't wait to see these buckets again!

Netizens reminisce about their McDonald's Boo Buckets

These buckets have been a collector's item for a while now. Once kids got too old to trick-or-treat, the pail that held so much beloved candy became a symbol of childhood. "Wonderful memories coming back," wrote one commenter on a Reddit post discussing the buckets' nostalgia factor. "Saw one last year being used by a trick-or-treater and a wave of nostalgia hit me," wrote another. Plenty of commenters also noted their other uses for the pails throughout the year, like storing crayons and other toys (and illicit substances when they got older).

Another Reddit thread discussed the toy from the perspective of '90s kids. Some now place the buckets out as decoration on Halloween, and one commenter wrote that their mom places LED tea lights in the pumpkins and puts them in the windows. If you have one, you can also use it to spice up your kitchen for Halloween by filling it with treats — or whatever else you need stored!
