This Once-Favorite Mexican Chain Boomed In The '90s, Now It's Down To Just Over A Dozen Locations

If you're a fan of Mexican food, you probably remember dining at Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant in the '90s and early 2000s. Beloved for its traditional dishes inspired by family recipes, the chain once had 40 locations across the U.S. It was even rated the best Mexican restaurant in America by Consumer Reports and was named as one of the top 50 emerging restaurant chains in the United States by FSR Magazine in 2019. However, if you've been craving Mexican food lately, you may have noticed the absence of this once widespread spot.

Common issues facing restaurants as of late, such as increased operating costs and declining consumer spending, have hit Abuelo's, causing the eatery to file for bankruptcy in late 2025. Despite this, the chain remains a presence on the market, especially in its native Texas. Abuelo's is a Mexican restaurant chain that was founded in 1989 in Amarillo, Texas, and is now headquartered in Lubbock, Texas, under Food Concepts International. The family-friendly spot is known for serving a range of traditional Mexican food dishes as well as Tex-Mex favorites, including tortilla soup and various types of enchiladas and fajitas. 

Unfortunately for fans, Abuelo's became one of many popular restaurant chains facing major financial trouble in recent years. It ultimately filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2025,  which allows businesses to continue to function while they work to regain their financial footing.

So, why did Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant close so many locations? The Mexican chain cited reasons for closings and ultimately a bankruptcy filing, including increased operating costs, decreased sales, and staffing issues. These issues worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic and continued into the years that followed, culminating in the eventual filing in 2025. However, Abuelo's had been facing growth concerns as far back as 2009.

Despite closing 10 of its remaining 23 restaurants since 2023, Abuelo's is still serving up its much-loved Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes at 13 locations across six states. And while it does not seem as though Abuelo's will be expanding any time soon, the restaurant filed its restructuring plan in spring 2026, paving the way for its current portfolio to stabilize and keep operating without further closures.
