Forget Donuts: How To Get The Publix Bakery To Glaze Other Sweet Treats

Publix might be known for its Pub Subs (it's in the name, after all), but another fan favorite has come out of the bakery department: glazed croissants. Publix made our list of the top 10 grocery store bakeries, where shoppers can follow the sweet aroma to find breads, cakes, pastries, pies, and donuts to add to their carts.

More recently, these glazed pastries have joined the list of Publix bakery favorites after customers started asking employees to coat plain croissants in the same glaze used on its other sweet treats. In fact, Publix now lists six-count glazed mini croissants as a bakery item at many locations, so customers no longer have to place a special request to try them.

If you're looking to enjoy the Publix bakery glaze on a different item, placing an order about a day ahead seems to work regularly. Some locations may also be able to accommodate the request on the spot, though this approach seems to work less consistently. If you've already tried — and loved — the glazed croissants, you might only be a phone call or a quick ask at the counter away from trying the same sweet glaze on another Publix pastry.

Other treats worth trying with the Publix Bakery glaze

Once you know that your local Publix will give the glaze the go-ahead, there are plenty of other options to add it to. One is Publix's strawberry and cheese strudel, where a sweet coating could complement the tangy cream cheese and fruity filling. An almond bear claw pastry is another contender, with the glaze adding extra sweetness to its flaky outside layer and nutty almond filling.

To level up a more familiar baked good, try the glaze on one of Publix's muffins, which come in a variety of flavors including blueberry, chocolate chip, and banana walnut. For something shareable, one of Publix's coffee cakes with an extra layer of glaze would be a crowd-pleaser, from family breakfast to a holiday dessert table.

We can't guarantee that every Publix will fulfill a custom request, but there are plenty of ready-made glazed options to take home, including the classic glazed donut, one of the underrated items to add to your Publix cart, cranberry-orange scones, apple fritters, and seasonal specials. Glaze does more than add sweetness, too. The coating acts as a protective layer, keeping moisture in the baked good and preventing air exposure so they stay fresh. So, even if you can't get a pastry glazed to order, warming these baked goods briefly in the microwave at home can slightly melt the glaze for a fresh-from-the-Publix-bakery taste.
