9 Popular Chocolates That Are Overpriced In 2026

Chocolate lovers across the country have likely all noticed one thing in recent months: Their favorite brands of chocolate all seem more expensive than they used to be. For the most part, it's true. Several major factors are combining to make many chocolates increase in price, and arguably become overpriced for what they are.
Cocoa beans are essential to the production of chocolate and can only grow in tropical-like climates near the Equator. The vast majority of cocoa beans are grown and harvested in West Africa, where crops are strained by climate change and illegal deforestation. Though cocoa prices are not as high as last year, producers buy in advance, so it will take a while for price drops to reach consumers — if at all.
President Donald Trump levied tariffs averaging 15% against major cocoa-producing countries, raising chocolate prices from the source and straining import-dependent domestic chocolatiers to the brink. Those tariffs were eliminated in November, but high prices remain. Chocolates made in the European Union, including Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, France, and Germany, are still subject to a separate 15% import tariff. As a result, many popular chocolates, from affordable brands to boutique bars, feel overpriced to the consumers who love them.
Lindt & Sprungli
Lindt & Sprungli is a large manufacturer of chocolate candies perhaps best known for its nearly ubiquitous Lindor truffles. But early this year, the company raised recommended selling prices on all of its chocolates by 19% in direct response to high cocoa prices. It is up to retailers whether or not to follow through on the price increase, but don't expect them to ignore it.
Ferrero Rocher
Ferrero Rocher is a classic chocolate candy that is also slowly creeping up in price. Within about a year, a 42-count gift box on Amazon has increased in price (including sales) from $13.98 to $14.86 and, most recently, $17.37. It's a lot to pay for what's inside, which is essentially a hazelnut-covered ball of Nutella (one of the fun facts about Nutella.)
Godiva
Godiva has arguably long been an overpriced luxury brand, with some longtime fans saying the product got worse as the company expanded. Unfortunately, the price is also going up, just like cocoa beans. In 2024, Godiva sold an 18-piece assorted chocolate gift box for $36. Today that same box is nearly 9% more expensive at $39.
Toblerone
A classic brand of Swiss chocolate (though smaller bars are now made in Slovakia,) Toblerone is another chocolate brand going up in price, especially because it's imported either way. But consumers have also noted the brand's shrinkflation, with 340-gram bars quietly taking the place of 360-gram ones and no appropriate reduction in price — a move Toblerone also pulled in 2019.
Valrhona
Valrhona is one of the chocolate brands that chefs say use the best ingredients. It shows, as this French company's impressively varied products are on the more expensive side of high-end chocolates. But they will cost you — an Amazon listing for a three-pack of Valrhona bars indicates that prices are higher than usual, and between the brand's premium, tariffs on imports, and broader industry struggles, they will probably stay higher than usual.
Trader Joe's chocolate
There are a lot of good Trader Joe's chocolate bars to look out for, including a perennial favorite, the Pound Plus chocolate bar. Prices vary by flavor, but even these affordable bars are beginning to straining the definition of the word. A 72% dark Pound Plus bar cost $5.99 in 2024. Today, it costs $8.99.
Ghirardelli
Ghirardelli has long been appreciated by chocolate lovers, home bakers, and professional chefs for making relatively affordable, high-quality chocolate. But the internet is crawling with comments from disappointed consumers about the rising costs of this pantry staple. One upset Reddit user recently observed 50% to 60% price hikes on their usual Ghirardelli products, and admitted that "I can not justify buying it at these prices."
Tony's Chocolonely
Consumers have recently complained that the price of these chocolate bars jumped from $6.99 per 180-gram bar to $8.95. Rising prices have been a problem for the brand long enough that, in 2022, it posted an explainer for why the already pricey chocolate was getting more expensive. Unfortunately, the explanation doesn't seem dated.
See's
See's is another premium chocolate brand about which people have long complained of high prices, even if it does taste good. Making matters worse in the modern chocolate market, See's candies are often seen at airports, where food and beverage items are generally overpriced.
