The Best Food Moments From ‘Game of Thrones’ So Far

"Game of Thrones" is a show full of murder, intrigue, mystery, magic... but it also has a lot of food. In honor of this, we took a look back at the show's first 60 episodes for the most notorious food moments. Some of these moments are small, like a lamprey pie eaten over strategizing or a loaf of bread given as a gift. Others set off a series of events that affect the entire Game of Thrones universe (just think of the weddings). Relive every enthralling culinary moment with the 20 best food moments from Game of Thrones so far.

Season 1, Episode 6: Daenerys Targaryen Eats a Stallion Heart

As a part of a Dothraki pregnancy ritual, the newly married and newly pregnant Daenerys Targaryen must eat an entire raw stallion's heart. Though she struggles to eat the meat and keep it down, eventually, she succeeds in consuming the entire organ.

Season 1, Episode 7: King Rob Drinks Wine and Is Mauled By a Boar

During his short time on Game of Thrones, three things are well established about King Robert Baratheon: He is a drunkard, he loves a good hunt, and though he has many illegitimate children, Queen Cersei's three kids are not among them. These things culminated in one of the earliest shocks of the show, when King Rob is kept "refreshed" with alcohol during a hunt, is attacked by a boar, and dies as a result.

Season 1, Episode 7: Daenerys Targaryen Is Saved From Poisoned Wine

Before his death, King Robert ordered that Daenerys be assassinated. A nameless wine seller is the one sent to the task. Once the merchant finds out who Dany truly is, he offers her a "special cask" of wine, which Ser Jorah finds suspicious. When the wine seller refuses to sample the wine before giving it to the khaleesi, his plot is discovered. His punishment is to be dragged by Dany's horse, bound and naked, which kills him. (Perhaps he'd have been better off sampling the wine.)

Season 2, Episode 8: Tyrion Lannister Dines on Lamprey Pie

While discussing his plans for the Battle of the Blackwater with his sister Cersei, Tyrion takes a large bite of lamprey pie (made with eels). In typical Tyrion style, he quips about his dear sister's cooking skills, of which she surely has none.

Season 3, Episode 2: Sansa Stark and Olenna and Margaery Tyrell Share Lemon Cakes

Lemon cakes are quite notably Sansa Stark's favorite food, and her northern location (where citrus does not grow) makes them a delicacy. In this tense season 3 scene, Sansa dines with the Tyrells and, after some prodding, exclaims that her former fiancé King Joffrey is a "monster" who promised to show her father mercy only to have him beheaded.

Season 3, Episode 9: The Bread and Salt Ritual

At the start of the notorious "Red Wedding," Walder Frey offered the guest rite to Robb Stark, his wife Talisa, Catelyn Stark, and their army, securing their trust through the sacred ritual of sharing a bowl of bread and salt. However, because of an order from Tywin Lannister (and a broken marriage pact between Robb and Frey's daughter), the Starks and their bannermen are all massacred.

Season 3, Episode 9: A Disgusting Meal at the Red Wedding

Ever wonder what was served at the Red Wedding (one of the most notorious meals in all of Game of Thrones)? According to the books, it was quite grotesque. Jellied calf brains and "stringy beef" were among the menu items. The foul foods set the scene for the foul atrocities that occur.

Season 3, Episode 10: Ramsay Bolton Eats a Pork Sausage

After torturing Theon Greyjoy endlessly and castrating him, Ramsay Bolton teases Theon by cruelly eating a thick pork sausage in front of him. In his typically cruel fashion, Ramsay laughs in Theon's face as he begs for death and then gives him the new moniker, "Reek."

Season 4, Episode 1: The Hound Gets a Chicken After Killing Lannister Supporters

Arya Stark and the Hound take refuge in a tavern on their travels in the Riverlands. Once there, they realize the men are supporters of King Joffrey Lannister, and they act as though they can do anything they want. But Arya and the Hound prove that is not the case. When Arya recognizes one of the men as the person who stole her beloved sword Needle, the duo attack and successfully kill all five Lannister supporters. They celebrate with a horse for Arya and a nice chicken for the Hound.

Season 4, Episode 2: King Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell Eat Pigeon Pie at Their Wedding

A traditional wedding dish in King's Landing, King Joffrey and his new bride Margaery Tyrell cut this ornate pastry in the middle of an otherwise chaotic dinner. As Joffrey draws his new Valyrian steel sword and cuts the pie, several white doves fly out.

Season 4, Episode 2: King Joffrey Is Poisoned at His Wedding

Shortly after cutting the pigeon pie, Joffrey and Margaery dive in to their wedding feast. Joffrey insists that his uncle, Tyrion Lannister, serve him a goblet of wine to wash down the pigeon pie. Little does he know, the wine has been poisoned. He collapses face down, begins vomiting and convulsing, and points out that the goblet he drank from was tampered with. Soon after, in one of the series' most satisfying deaths, he dies in the arms of his mother, Cersei.

Season 4, Episode 7: Hot Pie Gives a Loaf of Bread

Brienne and Podrick come across Hot Pie in an inn. As they dine on his kidney pie, Brienne reveals that they are in the service of Sansa Stark and are on the search for the Stark sisters. Though Hot Pie initially scoffs that the Starks are all traitors, he reveals his true loyalties by giving Brienne a loaf of bread shaped like a direwolf. He explains that he was with Arya and saw her with the Hound and that she is alive.

Season 4, Episode 9: Jon and Sam Eat Mutton Stew at the Wall

As Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly stand watch at the Wall as the wildlings approach to invade, they can be seen dining on mutton stew. This is a commonly eaten dish in the Game of Thrones universe, particularly once the harsh season of winter has arrived.

Season 5, Episode 3: Margaery Tyrell Snidely Offers Cersei Wine

After marrying King Tommen, Margaery Tyrell is feeling quite confident in King's Landing. After spending an "exhausting" night with her new husband and becoming quickly beloved by the townspeople, Margaery is approached by her mother-in-law Cersei. The two have a passive-aggressive battle of words, during which Margaery offers Cersei wine, while declaring that it's far too early for her to start drinking.

Season 5, Episode 4: Jaime Lannister and Ser Bronn Eat a Snake

While in Dorne, a sleeping Jaime Lannister is almost bitten by a venomous snake. In just the nick of time, Ser Bronn saves Jaime's life by throwing a sword at the snake's head and killing it. He then declares: It's breakfast time.

After Tyrion arrives in Meereen and earns Daenerys' trust, he becomes her official advisor. However, Dany is still a bit hesitant to give him her full trust (he is a Lannister, after all). She snatches up his wine at the table and declares that she has no use for a drunk as her counsel.

Season 5, Episode 9: Arya Peddles Oysters, Clams, and Cockles

Acting as "Lanna," Arya wanders the streets of Braavos selling shellfish, calling out, "Oysters, clams, and cockles!" She is supposed to assassinate the "Thin Man" by giving him a poisoned oyster, but abandons that mission to instead follow Ser Meryn, who is on her kill list, which she recites nightly like a prayer.

Season 6, Episode 4: Sansa Stark and Jon Snow Bond Over Old Nan's Kidney Pie

After years apart (which were filled with difficult times, to say the least), Sansa Stark is finally reunited with her half-brother Jon Snow at the Wall. After the two embrace, they reminisce over their childhood, which includes a fond memory of eating a favorite meal: kidney pie.

Season 6, Episode 9: Ramsay Bolton Gets Eaten by Dogs

Humans aren't the only ones who get a fine meal in Game of Thrones. After the Battle of the Bastards, Sansa Stark finally gets a bit of revenge by locking Ramsay Bolton in his kennel with his notoriously vicious dogs. Though he claims that their open kennels are no big deal because the dogs are loyal, they haven't been fed in a week. They tear away at him in one of the show's most satisfying villain deaths to date.

Season 6, Episode 10: Arya Serves Frey Pie

Arya Stark gets her revenge on Walder Frey by serving him a particularly heinous piece of pie. Using another's face to disguise her own, Arya sneaks in to House Frey, murders Frey's two sons, and bakes them in to a pie, which she serves to him as revenge for killing her mother and brother Robb.
