In Global First, All French Supermarkets Are Now Legally Required to Donate Unsold Food to Charities
Thanks to an anti-waste bill that has been signed into law after French parliament voted unanimously on the legislation last year, all supermarkets in France will now be legally required to donate unsold food to charities rather than throw it away or speed up its spoiling process. France is the first country in the world to enact the ban. The law will apply to any supermarket that is 400 square meters or larger (approximately 4,305 square feet) and requires such markets to sign donation agreements with charities or food banks. Supermarket presidents that do not comply with the law will face fines of up to €75,000 (approximately $83,550 USD) or two years' imprisonment.
April Bloomfield Is Opening a Burger Joint and It Looks Incredible
April Bloomfield, the British chef behind New York City hotspots like The Breslin and The Spotted Pig, is getting into the burger business. She and longtime business partner, restaurateur Ken Friedman, are opening Salvation Burger, a beefy sequel to Salvation Taco, located in the same Pod 51 Hotel. After a few minor setbacks, the new restaurant is scheduled to open this week. Salvation's burgers will be made with grass-fed beef that has been dry-aged for five weeks prior to being woodfire-grilled and served. Other notable menu items include boozy shakes, fish sandwiches, gourmet jalapeño poppers, smoked hot dogs with homemade mustard, and something called a peanut butter s'more pie.
Someone Found a Photo of Guy Fieri From His Fraternity Days and It's Glorious
And finally this Monday, it's not a far cry to imagine Guy Fieri as a fraternity brother because, in many ways, he already conforms to the stereotypes associated with the "Frat Guy" image. But now we have physical confirmation of Fieri's days of university past. Popular blog Total Frat Move, which focuses on Greek Life, posted what it claims is an un-doctored photo the frosted-tipped Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host as a frat brother at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Now to see the much younger frattier Fieri, check out this story in the News in Brief section.
