Why Customers Commonly Complain About Crock-Pot Lids

Did you know: Crock-Pot is actually a brand name for a particular type of slow-cooker? As with products like Kleenex tissues and Band-Aid adhesive bandages, "crock-pot" is now the word people use for any slow-cooker brand. Of course, as with all great inventions, there are some disadvantages to the Crock-Pot. One of the most common complaints about Crock-Pots is the lids not working the way they're supposed to. Specifically, they have a tendency to shatter.

The lid is a crucial part of any slow-cooker because it's what keeps the food inside pressurized. And yet, the lids on Crock-Pots can't stand up to that pressure more often than you might think. A quick search on social media will show post after post after post from slow-cooker users whose lids shattered without warning. This can be a surprising and even frightening moment. One user remembers: "I had a lid on a crock pot explode all over my kitchen and the pot roast I'd been waiting all day for. Sounded like a bomb going off." If this ever happens to you, make sure to throw out whatever you were making in the Crock-Pot. It's sad to waste food, especially something so savory and delicious and a slow-cooked recipe, but it's not worth the risk of eating a shard of glass, no matter how tasty it may be.

Other issues with Crock-Pot lids

Unfortunately, the tendency of Crock-Pot tops to shatter is not their only issue. There have been some design flaws, such as in 2020 when the brand's parent company had to issue a recall of over 940,000 Express Crock Multi-Cookers due to the lids pressurizing when not locked and detaching from the pot, potentially causing injury or burns.

Another issue is that, because a Crock-Pot lid has to keep the liquid and food inside pressurized, it has to be exactly the correct size. Trying any sort of other lid most likely won't work, so if you lose the top of your Crock-Pot, or it shatters as they so often do, you won't be able to cook any delicious slow-cooked meals. That's exactly what happened to one Redditor, who posted that they were at their "wits end" trying to find a replacement lid for their mom's vintage Crock-Pot. If you're in a similar position, your best bet is probably to check eBay and nearby thrift stores for a potential match, but don't count on it.
