Wendy's Had 2 Special Baked Potato Styles In The '90s, And We Want Them Back

Thinking about the 1990s brings back memories of life before smartphones, when you could listen to your favorite grunge rock song on your way to grab a video rental from Blockbuster. One of the things people often wish they could bring back from the decade is some of the unique food combinations from chain restaurants. Although baked potatoes arrived on its menu as early as 1983, Wendy's offered some baked potato flavors in the '90s that deserve a comeback. The current Wendy's menu features a plain baked potato or one with a handful of toppings like chili, cheese, bacon, sour cream, and chives, which might still be delicious, but is rather boring compared to the special baked potato styles of the past.

In 1990, Wendy's introduced some menu items you may have forgotten about, including hot stuffed potatoes in Italian and Mexican versions. Wendy's SuperBar of the same decade was an all-you-could-eat deluxe salad bar with Mexican and Italian stations. The toppings on the Hot Stuffed Potatoes echoed what customers could already find on the SuperBar.

Wendy's Hot Stuffed potatoes were so '90s

In a 1990 commercial, Wendy's founder Dave Thomas introduced Italian- and Mexican-style hot stuffed potatoes, saying, "Man does not live by hamburgers alone․" Wendy's piled multiple toppings onto its Mexican- and Italian-themed Hot Stuffed Potatoes. The former came with taco meat, cheese sauce, picante sauce, and sour cream. The latter was topped with sausage, a meat-based tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese. The SuperBar featured stations that complemented the two special baked potatoes, with items like tacos, nachos, pasta, and garlic bread.

Wendy's Mexican and Italian Hot Stuffed Potatoes are just one example of the '90s food experiments that disappeared into the archives of food history. Some other forgotten items include Wendy's Fresh Stuffed Pitas and McDonald's McPizza. Unlike other former menu items, Wendy's continues to sell its longtime baked potatoes, without the same toppings․ Bringing back these international-inspired versions would add a '90s retro vibe served with a hint of nostalgia.
