The Southern Chain Known For Its Scratch-Made Breakfast Sandwiches

When it comes to breakfast, there's quite a bit of competition in the fast food market. Major chains like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and Chick-fil-A get their fair share of that market. Regional chain Biscuitville, though, is well-known for its scratch-made breakfast sandwiches. Along with being one of the best fast food chains from North Carolina and a restaurant chain that serves the best Southern-style food, it has been chosen as the nation's best fast food breakfast spot in USA Today Readers' Choice 10Best contest for four years in a row.

The origins of Biscuitville go back to 1966, when founder Maurice Jennings owned some bread-and-milk stores in Burlington, North Carolina. At some point (the record isn't clear), he sold take-out pizzas, and the chain expanded to six Pizzaville locations. Eventually, he began attracting the morning crowd to supplement the stores' income by serving biscuits. The biscuits were so popular that Jennings opened his first biscuit-only shop in Danville, Virginia, in 1975, and now there are more than 85 Biscuitville locations in North and South Carolina and southern Virginia.

The chain's success has been built around fresh-baked biscuits, which have always been made using a three-ingredient recipe from Jennings' grandmother. Every 15 minutes, a new batch comes out of Biscuitville's ovens. Many of them are turned into breakfast sandwiches that feature various combinations of bacon, cheese, country ham, eggs, fried and grilled chicken, fried steak, and sausage. Limited-time biscuit sandwiches hit the menu periodically, too, such as the double bacon BLT, Nashville hot spice chicken, and southern Philly fried steak. Plus, any biscuit can be a "Skinny Biscuit," which is made with the same recipe but thinner for fewer calories.

Freshly baked biscuit sandwiches are certainly the heart of Biscuitville, with new batches coming out of the oven on a schedule during business hours (locations generally open between 5 and 6 a.m. and close by 2 p.m.). Even among the wide variety of fast food options, the chain placed in the top three in Daily Meal's ranking of fast food fried chicken sandwiches. Sandwiches aren't the only way that you can enjoy the biscuits, though.

Aside from ordering plain or butter biscuits with grape or strawberry jelly, one sandwich alternative is the sausage gravy biscuit. It's made with the same local pork sausage that landed in the top three of Daily Meal's ultimate ranking of chain restaurant breakfast sausages. However, the chain offers turkey sausage as well. Also on the Biscuitville menu are platters that generally include a biscuit beside a combination of eggs and meat — bacon, country ham, fried or grilled chicken, fried steak, and sausage. You also get to choose a side dish, such as plain or cheese grits, a hashbrown, sausage gravy, country fries, or hashbrown casserole.

The Biscuitville menu even goes beyond biscuits. If you prefer, you can order English muffins plain, with jelly, or as sandwiches. Buttermilk pancakes are also available in singles, three stacks, and platters if you enjoy a sweeter breakfast. Blueberry muffins are another option, as are seasonal muffin flavors like apple cider and strawberry (the most popular). Best of all, nothing at Biscuitville is prepared instantly or arrives partially cooked to be finished before serving, so you know it will be fresh.
