What's Cooking On 1060: Fall Festivals And Good, Plain Cooking

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –Lo Spiedo, which means "the spit" in Italian, opens on Monday, October 27th, at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.
"We wanted to get back to just basic cooking," says co-owner Jeff Michoud (top photo). "We're not going to be doing any brining, any curing, no special machines in here. It's going to be wood, fire, heat, and salt and pepper."

And the Pumpkin Fall Fest takes place on Saturday, October 25th, at the South Street Shambles.

Mike Harris, executive director of the South Street Headhouse District, describes some of the day's activities:
"Pumpkin painting, pumpkin giveaways — but those are not for eating. But we will have plenty of food that day. We will have chocolatiers from the Chocolate Clinic. We'll have Las Bugambilias, which is a great Mexican restaurant in our district. Chewy's food truck will be available, as well as Sweet Tooth, our candy shop in the South Street District."

Also on Saturday, it's East Passyunk Avenue's annual "Fall Fest and Spooky Saturday."
Renee Gilinger, executive director of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, says there will be food, beer, and (of course) candy.
"Last year we had dipped candy apples," she recalls. "Some of the folks will surprise me and they'll bring kids' treats out, usually baked goods, so plenty of sweets for the little ones."
