Ramen: Ivan Orkin Slurp Shop
www.ivanramen.com
This tremendously popular ramen shop is chef Ivan Orkin's first outside of Japan (there is now a Lower East Side location too). The ramen is cooked with the "double soup" method, which combines long-simmering chicken and dashi broths. The Classic Shio Ramen, $12, combines sea salt, two broths, pork belly chashu and chewy rye noodles. Whatever you order, don't forget about Ivan Orkin's umami-packed add ons like roasted tomatoes, chili garlic oil and pork belly or chicken chashu.
Tapas: El Colmado
www.elcolmadonyc.com
Tertulia chef Seamus Mullen brought classic Spanish tapas to Midtown West with El Colmado. The menu celebrates Spanish ingredients like olive oil, preserved seafoods, Marcona almonds and fresh ingredients. The simple pan con tomato – grilled bread, garlic, tomato and olive oil for $6 – is a fantastic start to your meal. Try the date stuffed with an almond and Valdeon cheese and wrapped in bacon ($6 for two) and the lamb meatballs with mojo picon and sheep's milk yogurt ($11).
Charcuterie: Cannibal
www.cannibalnyc.com
Pates, sausages, bacon, salumi.... Cannibal is a carnivore's paradise. While the menu features small plates, entrees and vegetable side dishes, opt for the charcuterie. The pig's head terrine ($11) is made with capers and lemon butter while the lamb tartare ($17) arrives with fried garlic, cucumber and black olive aioli. What's more, Cannibal serves a bacon board with three selections for $16. Don't overlook Cannibal's excellent selection of beers to pair with your charcuterie picks.
Sandwiches: Court Street Grocers
www.courtstreetgrocers.com
The Court Street Grocers menu offers inventive breakfast and lunch sandwiches galore. Pick the Italian Combo, $10, or the Beef Shank, $12. The Italian Combo comes loaded with mortadella, salami, hot coppa, three types of cheese and condiments. The Beef Shank is stuffed with braised beef shank, Gorgonzola dolce, caramelized onion, pickled red peppers and arugula. Whatever you pick, come hungry or prepared to share with friends.
Coffee: Blue Bottle
www.bluebottlecoffee.com
San Francisco-based Blue Bottle has sprouted a few New York locations. But Gotham West's location is still worth heading to. Blue Bottle offers multiple individually prepared drip coffees. All coffee options are thoughtfully selected – don't be afraid to ask questions, the baristas are happy to walk you through each coffee's flavors. On a hot day, spring for the New Orleans iced coffee. Coffee, ice and chicory are mixed with whole milk and a little sweetener for a supremely refreshing treat.
