Why Wild Dunes Resort Makes The Ultimate Beach Getaway

Planning vacations can be tricky, especially when traveling with a group.Having to manage different interests and expectations while keeping everyone happy can be a monumental task, but it doesn't have to be. Located on the northern tip of Isle of Palms, Wild Dunes Resort (a Destination Hotel) offers a variety of dining options and activities (both on and off property). From a blacksmith class to poolside lounging, there's something for everyone at this picturesque island getaway.

Where to Eat

Coastal Provisions

A high-end option for locavore fare inside The Boardwalk Inn, a curated menu of steaks and seafood is served in an elegant dining room with a nautical vibe. Additional seating is available on the terrace overlooking the adult-only pool, and cocktails and bites can be enjoyed in poolside cabanas. We recommend the peanut hummus and housemade ricotta, crispy chicken skins, and crab hushpuppies.

Huey's Southern Eats

Located in the Links Course Clubhouse with prime views of the fairways, Huey's specializes in Southern staples accompanied by cocktails, wine, and beer. For breakfast, there's griddled ham with red-eye gravy, a create-your-own omelet option made with locally farmed eggs, and homemade buttermilk biscuits.

Billy G's Smokehouse

The newest addition to the Wild Dunes Resort dining scene, this family friendly barbecue joint on the Village Plaza serves its house-smoked meats in a laid-back environment complete with large communal tables. On the menu are shareable platters, starters like pimento cheese with fried pork rinds, and desserts like banana pudding.

The Grand Pavilion Bar & Grill

For beachside dining, The Grand Pavilion Bar & Grill offers casual grub like burgers and wraps plus frozen and mixed drinks, all served alfresco with prime views of the water. There's a kids menu with bites and non-alcoholic "kiddie cocktails" if you're dining with children.

What to Do

Take a Blacksmith Class

Local blacksmith James Irving leads ironwork workshops to educate people about this celebrated art form that adorns historic churches, gardens, and gates all around Charleston. Better yet, you'll get to take a part of the experience home with you as James guides you in creating an original piece of your own. It's a unique and rewarding experience, and probably not something you'd expect to be doing while on a beach vacation, which makes it all the more fun.

Go Crabbing

Take a quick bike ride to a favorite crabbing spot on the resort and soak in the serene scene while taking part in this Southern pastime. It's an easy, relaxing way to pass the time – just be ready to get your hands (and feet) a little dirty and muddy. Catch and release only, but if you're craving some seafood...

Head to Capers Island for a Lowcountry Boil

A quick boat ride away, this undeveloped barrier island is a great off-resort excursion. You can look for shells and explore its boneyard beach characterized by trees that have been bleached and weathered over time. It's the perfect setting for a beachside boil, where a simple recipe of fresh saltwater, Old Bay Seasoning, potatoes, corn, and shellfish combine to make a hearty, mouthwatering meal.

Explore Downtown Charleston

Just a short drive from the resort, there's much to see and do in this historic city with its charming old homes along cobblestone streets and a beautiful waterfront park. Learn about Charleston's history on one of the many tours offered, shop for locally made goods at the City Market (established in 1804), or dig into the city's dynamic dining scene.
