That makes Sliders a great spot to watch the U.S. Open with the littlest and teen tennis fans in the family. The original bar in West Hartford is still the sentimental flagship of the company, which, with its Plainville site, has grown to five establishments – all of them in the Nutmeg State. Sliders is famous for its pork "wings" and has both a full adult and kids' menu. A big supporter of local charities (especially those which help children), it is no wonder that ESPN lists it among the top sports bars not just in the state, but in the country.

Anywhere a patron looks at 1st and 10, they will see a screen showing sports. The "360 degrees" of viewing boast is made good by the 18 televisions carrying Direct TV sports and the twin 15-foot HD projection screens. In August and early September, most of those screens will be carrying tennis, and as many of the matches will be played in daytime, moms and dads can bring their children. The menu is also kid-friendly, but no adult will go hungry if they order one of the bar's massive sandwiches, big burgers or full-plate entrees.

The bar at Chicago Sam's in Crowell is 40 yards long, and that means there are plenty of seats to sit up close to watch the U.S. Open and any other sport that is up on one of Sam's 100 televisions. For those who want to sit back in a more comfortable spot and see the players chase after the tennis balls in all their life-size glory, there are also three 100-inch projection screens. Although most of the tennis action is scheduled for daytime, Chicago Sam's does keep the kitchens open until midnight – and serves the full 70-plus-item menu right up until the clock strikes 12. The beer menu is also extensive, with nearly two dozen on tap – and many more available by the bottle.

Just because Stamford's favorite sports star played and coached baseball doesn't mean that the bar that bears his name devotes all of its many TV screens to the nation's favorite pastime. Sure, there will be baseball on a lot of those TVs, but a true sportsman and sports fan like Bobby Valentine knows a good game – and a good opportunity – when he sees one.
