Tony Award-Winning Play Showing During Arts Week

DENVER (CBS4) -"Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike" is a black comedy that won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013 for its time on Broadway.

Right now, the Denver Center Theatre Company is putting it on in Denver. Recently, CBS4′s Gloria Neal got a tour of the intricate set with a couple of the actors from the production.

"On the staircase here we have the three pictures of the siblings when they were young, so that top picture is my high school picture," said Kathleen McCall, the actress who plays "Masha" in "Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike."

Eddie Lopez, who plays "Spike," points out Russian nesting dolls scattered around the set, a homage to the play's Russian references.

It was written by Chris Durang, who took some of the names from the work of Anton Chekhov, a famous Russian playwright.

"You don't have to be a Chekhov scholar to enjoy this play. It's set in present day. It's a ball, I mean really, there is a lot of family and nostalgia thrown into the mix," Lopez told CBS4.

It explores themes like rivalry, love, and regret among middle-age siblings.

"We have people leaving in tears. They're laughing uproariously and in the end they're like this is so heartwarming," McCall explained.

"It's really about family and lust and love and trust and forgiveness," Lopez added.

"Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike" runs at The Ricketson through December 16th.

The Denver Center Theatre Company will present "A Christmas Carol" and "SantaLand Diaries" starting Nov. 28.

Denver Arts Week runs through Nov. 15 with a wide range of art and cultural events.
