Tasha's To Do List: Nov. 13-16
KRLD – It's going to be a chilly weekend across North Texas, but there are still plenty of entertainment options for you! Tasha Stevens finds the best food, music and exhibits happening this weekend!
– I am so jealous. My 7-year-old is going on a field trip to this Friday! I told her the only field trips my school went on back in the day were to the potato chip factory and the bottling plant. It just isn't fair.
The Magic of Christmas at the Gaylord Texan kicks off with a Lonestar Christmas which features 2 million twinkling lights, 15,000 ornaments and dozens of lavish holiday displays that include larger-than-life decorations. The ICE! Portion features Frosty the Snowman, an ice carving zone and 12 lanes of snow tubing.
– Here is another exciting attraction. A dude that destroys a bar stool with a chainsaw on stage, or was that just the time I saw him in concert? This Sunday at Gas Monkey Bar and Grill, check out Jesse James Dupree and Jackyl.
– The weather will be chilly this weekend, which works out perfectly with this cooler than cool new exhibit opening this weekend at the Dallas Arboretum. Sunday through January 4, The 12 Days of Christmas will feature an elaborate collection of 25-foot Victorian gazebos filled with costumed characters you would swear were human, along with animals made famous by the Christmas carol.
– Here is a chance for you to see two awesome comedians together in one night. See Dennis Miller and David Spade Friday night at Winstar.
– I don't care when this movie is on — I will sit and watch it. Maybe it is because it is about the last day of school, in May of 1976 in a Texas town. Or maybe it is because of the creepy yet cool Matthew McConaughey character David Wooderson. If you love "Dazed and Confused" as much as I do, check it out at Friday night's midnight showing at the Inwood Theatre.
– This guy is a Louisiana native and ran for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana a few years back, but if you know nothing else about this guy, know that one of his biggest hits was "Queen of My Double-Wide Trailer". Check out Sammy Kershaw at Billy Bob's Friday night.
– If 80's rock is your thing, head over to the Granada Saturday night for Roxshow 2014 — The Tribute Trifecta. Basically, this is a night of tributes to your favorite bands of the 80's. You'll see One Wild Night — a Bon Jovi Tribute — Raised on Radio — a Journey Tribute — and Jukebox Hero, a Foreigner Tribute. What you won't see is Tasha in a pair of spandex pants. Unless they are covered in a warm layer of fur.
– A longtime Dallas musician recently passed away unexpectedly. This Sunday at Tolbert's in Grapevine, a benefit will be held to help the wife and two kids of James Davis who played with Fastlane, Bricks in the Wall, and The Plunge. Beginning at 1 pm Sunday, 5 tribute bands will play. So hang out, hear some great music and help a great cause.
– A couple of movies hit theaters Thursday you might want to check out. First there is the drama "Rosewater," written and directed by Jon Stewart, based on the memoir Then They Came for Me. The film is about a London-based Iranian-Canadian journalist detained in Iran for 118 days because of an interview he gave regarding the country's presidential election.
Then at the other end of the spectrum – the extreme other end — "Dumb and Dumber To." This sequel to 1994's "Dumb and Dumber" finds good-hearted but dimwitted best friends Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas in search for Harry's long lost daughter. With whom Lloyd is in love. Creepy.
– There are a lot of jobs I would take, but following Randy Rhoads in Ozzy's band after Randy's death in a plane crash would not be one of them. Luckily for us, Jake E Lee took that gig, and Saturday night at Trees, you can see and hear him play all those awesome tunes from back in the day like "Bark at the Moon", "Lightning Strikes", "Ultimate Sin" and "Shot in the Dark".
– Saturday (finally), The 3rd Annual Whiskey & Fine Spirits Festival. Whiskey, fine spirits, tasty treats...it simply does not get better than this, people.
– We are getting down to the wire for The 2014 Fall Meeting of Champions for American Quarter Horses at Lonestar Park. This deal will end Saturday.
– Even though Veterans Day was Tuesday, Reunion Tower is Saluting the Armed Forces through November 26. All active, retired, and veteran military members get 50% off GeO-Deck tickets when they visit in uniform or show their ID.
– Don't get this confused. It could mean a world of hurt if you choose the wrong outfit. See, if you were going to see The Black Eyed Peas, it would mean a totally different vibe. Since this is actually The Black Keys, your ensemble can be much lower key. No pun intended. Unless you dug it. Check out The Black Keys at the AAC this Sunday.
– Sundance Square is the place to find The Art of Dr. Seuss' exhibit at the Milan Gallery on Houston Street this month. This exhibit will feature the whimsical illustrations of Dr. Seuss.
– Kevin from 'The Office' will lead SMU's homecoming parade this Saturday as the parade grand marshal. Actor Brian Baumgartner, who starred for nine seasons as Kevin Malone on the American version of The Office, graduated from SMU's Meadows School of the Arts in 1995.
– I saw a link to a story on the Drudge Report this week about the guys at Google creating this robot that can do the Karate Kid Crane kick. I don't know if these guys will have anything like that, but I bet whatever they come up with will be cool. The Texas BEST Regional Robotics Championship is happening Friday at Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. This annual Championship is a competition for high-school and middle-school students, sponsored by the University of Texas at Dallas. Each year the students are presented with a different challenge. This year, the challenge is called "Blade Runner."
– I am usually all about guitars, but when it comes to this band, it is all about the bass. And no. I am not talking about "that" bass. I am taking about the mind-blowing playing of Les Claypool. Hear tunes you dig like "My Name is Mud", and "Tommy the Cat". It is Primus, Sunday night at the Majestic.
