The Sweet Auburn Experience

(AP/WAOK) Regional planners and experts on "tactical urbanism" hope to show this weekend how the concept could work in the Atlanta neighborhood known as Sweet Auburn.

The Atlanta Regional Commission and others say they want to show what a "lifelong community" might look like by temporarily transforming two blocks of Auburn Avenue east of downtown.

The commission said the aim is to create a place that allows young and old to live well and age in place.

Organizers of the event say younger and older adults are looking for some of the same characteristics in neighborhoods: walkable and bikeable communities close to shopping and amenities.

Several events are planned for Saturday and Sunday, including demonstrations in urban gardening and a farmer's market, art tours, food trucks, health screenings and exercise classes.
