Sandwich of the Week: The Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe's Veggie Melt
Tucked away in a quiet corner, The Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe serves one of the best sandwiches in Maine not called a lobster roll.
It isn’t the biggest or most eye-catching place, but once you take note of the happy families, welcoming employees, and most importantly, the food, you’ll forget about all of that.
Located in Brunswick, Bowdoin’s college town, students usually run over and order The Veggie Melt ($6.95) after a long game.
The topping is a mixture of tomatoes, onions, carrots, and green peppers. Unlike other veggie sandwiches, this one isn’t grilled. Instead, it’s nice and creamy, with some chunks similar to the texture of chunky mashed potatoes. For this open faced sandwich, it comes on a potato bread, "a hearty white bread", baked from scratch daily. It comes toasted, so the texture balances out with the toppings.
The hot sandwich is topped with melted Provolone as well as homemade boursin, an herbed goat cheese. The boursin isn’t overly creamy nor is there an overload of it on the sandwich. It’s a nice spoonful placed in the middle of the sandwich, so it gives the extra moisture the sandwich needs and coats every inch of the toppings.
Wild Oats & Bakery is also known for other homemade goods such as cakes, pies, and soups. Take yours to go or stay and eat, but we’re warning you, you’re going to want to stay, and possibly take something home to go.
