The Rum House Diary

Since my move to nola four months ago, I've been told to check out The Rum House. Only blocks from my place, and plenty of friends to vouch for it, I needed to hear no more. The name alone sold this rum drinker. Countless times we attempted to go for dinner, but it was always packed. The attractive nice man behind the host stand always said our wait would be an hour and a half. Today though, we finally got in. Not only did we not have to wait, we landed a coveted picnic table outside. Which if you've ever driven down Magazine Street, you know this is the place to sit. To be honest, everything on the menu looked good. As any cheese fan would do, we started with chips and queso blanco dip. If I'm at a restaurant that has queso, I'm ordering it. Period. Glad we did, it was awesome. With 15 Caribbean style tacos to choose from, I figured their "Two Dat" taco combo sounded like a good first meal there. Creole rib, and jerk chicken made for a yummy lunch selection. With two sides to choose I went for our waitress Kimberly's suggestion of smothered veggies and roasted poblano and manchego polenta. I've never said veggies were out of this world, but I'm saying it now. The polenta while tasty too, did not get as much attention as it should have due to the fact that I basically inhaled the chips and queso. As much as I wanted to enjoy an adult beverage in the middle of the day, I opted to be responsible and hydrated and drank water, straight from a huge mason jar. Why do I love those so much? I will be back for those adult beverages though, with a killer happy hour, or as they say, "island time". Weekdays from 3-630 you and I can enjoy everything from 2 dollar domestic bottles and pints, to 4 dollar house Margaritas and who could resist a 5 dollar mojito or rum punch? When in Rome right? Friendly staff, delicious food and picnic tables big enough to hold you and all your friends. Even that one who is there who know one is sure who invited them. If you can't afford a trip to the Caribbean right now for a little escape, look no further to get your fill.
