Patrick Dempsey And Porsche Designs Are Collaborating On The Perfect Racing Watch
Is there anything Dr. McDreamy can't do? Actor, dad, founder of Dempsey Racing and professional race car driver, Patrick Dempsey is adding another title to his long list of accomplishments. Partnering with Porsche Designs, the Renaissance man will be designing a limited edition timepiece scheduled to be released June 15. A revamped version of their Porsche Design Dashboard Automatic Chronograph, the Porsche Design Dempsey Racing Limited Edition will be made of titanium, with a matte black dial, easy-grip crown, non-reflective sapphire crystal and will be water resistant up to 100 meters—just in case you run into a puddle on the track.

"For men, the major piece of jewelry is a watch," Dempsey told WWD. "There's always a fascination with great movements and how intense the labor is that goes into it—and, of course, telling the time." Limited to 50 pieces, the collaboration between the two came together after years of Dempsey racing Porsches exclusively, and recently extending his driving contract with them for another two years at the end of 2013. He confesses the sport and watches are so interlinked that it's almost organic moving from one to the other. "Technically, you have to tell time all the time, whether glancing over while driving, or when you're in the pits, or when you're timing other cars. You're always in an endurance race."
After months of design work, Dempsey finally created a piece he was satisfied with—a driving watch that features his brand's crest on the watch face, "Racing Edition" at the 12 o'clock mark and Porsche Designs printed throughout. "I think the watch we created is for everyday as much as it is for racing and tracking speed," he explained. "It's elegant enough for night, but really durable and precise when you use it on the track. Racing is all about time and balance—a great metaphor for life."
