One Tank Trip: West Point

West Point is a sprawling and magnificently appointed 16,000-acre federal military reservation. Established by Thomas Jefferson in 1802, West Point encompasses the United States Military Academy and other significant, historical locations of interest to visitors. Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, contiguous to the village of Highland Falls, a visit to this scenic location affords visitors the opportunity to partake in much of New York State's best, including winery tours and fine dining. Just 50 miles north of the city, West Point is the perfect location for a chockfull day trip or weekend getaway.
Getting There
Head north to the George Washington Bridge, cross over the upper deck and exit right onto the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Take the Palisades north to Bear Mountain Bridge traffic circle. Follow signs to West Point along Route 9W North for 3 miles, exiting right onto Route 218 North to Highland Falls. Enter West Point through the Thayer Gate.

The Military Academy at West Point is a four-year institution dedicated to training our nation's finest for leadership positions in the Army. A visit to the Academy is awe-inspiring, offering up glimpses into both our Nation's military past and future. Your starting point should be the West Point Visitor's Center, where you can view videos about cadet life and access educational materials about the entire facility. You will require a valid, U.S.-issue ID to enter this and all other installations within the facility. Not-to-be-missed points of interest include:
- West Point Museum – A vast collection of military artifacts and militia are housed here. Considered to hold the oldest and largest array of pertinent historical objects of note about military life and service, the Museum provides extensive programming for both military personnel and civilians, which strives to educate and interpret the collection. The Museum also administers seasonally-operated Fort Putnam and the cannon collection on Trophy Point.
- West Point Cemetery – The purpose of the Cemetery is to offer the last, final salute to those who have served and dedicated their lives to our country. A national, historic landmark, the cemetery is the oldest military post cemetery in existence today. The Old Cadet Chapel, saved by West Point cadets from demolition in 1910, was installed here for posterity.
- Eisenhower Hall Theatre – Concerts and special events take place throughout the year at this spacious, well-appointed theatre. An excellent, state-of-the-art sound system assures that you will enjoy star-studded performances from popular comedic artists to seasoned Broadway stars. Pre-performance dining overlooking the scenic Hudson is available on-site.

Just 15 miles and 20 minutes down the road from West Point is the oldest operating winery in the country. Established in 1839, Brotherhood Winery offers a wide variety of tours, tastings and special events, such as the Wine and Sangria Pig Roast, as well as private parties. It is best known for its Dry Rieslings and celebrated specialty wines, including Mead and Sweet Lolly Red.
