PLANO (CBDFW.COM) – Members of the community will come together after sunset to celebrate National Night Out. The annual event raises awareness about safety and police procedures. But it's also an opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another.
"It's really getting to know everyone. They know we're a team in this and really taking care of each other... sharing the typical crime watch scenarios but basically to know each other," said Plano resident Bob Kirkpatrick, whose organized a block party with neighbors and police for 4 years. He is also active with his neighborhood crime watch and says Tuesday night's event is not just for show.
Residents in the Pittman Creek section of Plano will gather for gumbo and good times. The city of Plano has 48 National Night Out events scheduled. It's one of the most active cities in the nation. That means anything from people congregating on each other's lawns to enjoying full blown festivals.
Police said they credit community awareness as the reason Plano is consistently ranked as one of the country's safest.
Kirkpatrick said he expects 50 to 60 people plus some police officers to celebrate National Night Out.
