Jay Lloyd's Getaway: New York's South Street Seaport
By Jay Lloyd
MANHATTAN, NY. (CBS) — Nearly two years after Hurricane Sandy, New York's popular South Street Seaport is still recovering. But it's really worth a getaway visit.
The mall couldn't be saved and with it went waterfront eateries with a seafood flare that recalled the storied Fulton Fish Market that once stood on the spot. But the Seaport has become a gathering place for international visitors and New Yorkers. Wall Street workers gather here for lunch in beach chairs or on river view steps. There's free lunchtime entertainment and a stunning view of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Visitors from countries as far away as Japan, Brazil and Algeria shared the same reaction.
"It's so beautiful and a nice view."
"I's very nice. I like it very much."
"The view and the bridge."
A lunch at the Water Mark Cafe in the lee of a historic ship collection caps an ideal morning at the spot where you can catch a water taxi to Brooklyn and Queens, take a river cruise or go for a sail on a schooner.
