Geese Cause Problem On Green For Golfers

MINERAL WELLS (CBSDFW.COM) – Canada Geese have caused problems at Holiday Hill Country Club in Mineral Wells.
Golf is all about getting to the hole, without getting into anything else but these birds have made the game difficult.

The unwanted pest made things difficult for Golfer Michael Burnett. "They're all around," said Burnett. "They're in the fairways. They're in the greens."

Tee Jay Burge is the head golf professional at Holiday Hill and is inconvenienced by the problem. "It's a headache for sure."
Burge said Canada Geese have lived around the course for years. But the group grew, and has stayed.

They eat four pounds of grass a day and that is not good for a business built on grass. They also redeposit a pound or more.
Holiday hills tried to chase them away with lights, stuffed coyotes, traps, egg hunts, but it has not worked.

The idea of noise cannons to frighten the geese was considered. The concern is how will local homeowners react to constant loud noises.

"We have so many houses that border the golf course out here, using one of the noise cannons would really bother the homeowners over here," said Burge.

The country club wanted to avoid lethal methods, but also wanted to make sure golfers, don't avoid the course. "I like birdies but not that kind of birdies," explained frequent golfer Burnett.

The course borrowed noise cannons from the city once used to chase off other species of birds.
