Mars Inc. Pledges $1 Billion In Efforts Against Climate Change

Mars Inc. has pledged $1 billion in the fight against climate change as part of its "Sustainable in a Generation" plan and expects to reduce its carbon footprint by 60 percent by 2050.

Mars, which makes some of your favorite candy bars (Milk Way, Snickers, Twix, and many more) is concentrating on Earth-friendly and people-friendly projects.

The brand already uses 100 percent renewable energy for their operations in Belgium, Brazil, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and the company plans to add six more countries to that list in 2018, according to their website.

The brand has also contributed to industry coalitions like the Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming, which invests in small farms, and Cocoa Action, which aims for sustainable cocoa growth.

Mars CEO Grant F. Reid sees this move as not just for the planet, but also for commerce. "We're a food business, which is based on agriculture, so we care a lot about the farmers who supply us around the world. We care about this both on a societal level but also on a business level," he told Business Insider.

Mars is not the only major corporation aiming for sustainability. McDonald's is investing in sustainable beef.
