The national touring company of "Dirty Dancing" at The Fox is packaged to please. It has all-embracing musical appeal that delights a wide variety of age groups. Lighting design and scenic projection change the settings and backdrops with great color and visual impact. Sound will knock you out of your seat. The orchestra is a level above the stage. You would pay to hear them alone. They are terrific.
Samuel Pergande headlines as Johnny Castle, the chief dancing instructor and ladies man at a sedate family resort in the Catskills. It's the summer of 1963. Jillian Mueller is "Baby," a young woman spending a summer off from the Peace Corp with her family. When Johnny has to make "Baby" his new dancing partner, "Baby" learns more than just dance steps. Her involvement with some of the backstage drama among the employees of the resort sets her life off in a new direction and puts a spotlight on her relationship with her family.
As you might expect, choreography and musical nostalgia rule the evening. "Dirty Dancing" is sexy and builds to its final big number ("The Time of My Life") in a way that has the audience in a frenzy when it all comes together. Devotees of this storied movie franchise are given a whole new level of appreciation and excitement with this stage version. Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley were right. You too will have the time of your life at "Dirty Dancing."
