DeRusha Eats: Table 65 In New Richmond, Wis.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Look closely on dozens of Twin Cities menus and you'll find the fish from Star Prairie Trout Farm — just 45 minutes from our downtowns.
Besides their commercial fishing operation, they have ponds where anyone can fish.
My morning show co-anchor, Jamie Yuccas, had more success than I did at fishing.
Less than ten minutes from the trout farm, in New Richmond, Wis., you'll find Table 65.
Ann Hall owns this place with her husband.
"We knew people wanted something very different," Hall said.
For just about $13, they'll take your fresh catch, pan sear it with salt and pepper, then give it one of four different treatments — from lemon herb to applewood smoked bacon.
They'll also pile up different sides, almost all from local farmers.
"The best part is, like, introducing people to kale," she said. "We just love sautéing it up with olive oil and garlic crispy, and just passing it out and making them eat it."
The food is fantastic, and it's for a community that's been starving for something different.
"It just spiraled into all of this. You know, suddenly we have curries and Ahi tuna and fresh food," Hall said. "And we wouldn't do it any other way but the hard way."
Hall says it's tricky being in a smaller town in Wisconsin.
"It's hard because we're not a touristy town. However the industry that goes on here, the things people do in this town are incredible," she said.
If you're not going to fry it up yourself, you can't beat catching your own fish in Star Prairie, and then heading up the road to New Richmond for the freshest, most delicious dinner around.
The Star Prairie Trout Farm is just five miles north of Table 65 on Highway 65.
