A Day In University Circle

There's a certain vibe about being in a college community and the University Circle district of Cleveland is one of the liveliest. There's always something going on; whether it be a special exhibit, a parade or a festival. Check the calendar of events so you don't miss anything. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even have the website plan your day for you.

However you spend your day, chances are you'll want to start it off with a cup of coffee. The award-winning University Circle Coffee House is where all of those in-the-know go to get their morning jolt. An extensive list of coffees, teas and other beverages – either hot or cold – means you'll undoubtedly find something to your liking. The homemade bakery goods and desserts won't disappoint either. If you think you'll be hungry later, pack one of the salads or wraps to go.

The Botanical Garden is something that everyone will enjoy, from little tots to grandma and grandpa. Two special "continents" can be visited in the large Glasshouse – the rainforest of Costa Rica and the spiny desert of Madagascar. You'll discover native plants, birds, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians from each. Outside, the Collection Garden is a place where you'll want to wander slowly. It's the garden you always wished you had in your backyard.

Recently having undergone a complete renovation, the Cleveland Art Museum is now completely open. Admission is always free. On the first level, you'll find ancient and medieval art, along with tapestries and illuminated manuscripts. On level two, the kids' favorite Armor Court is still there with knights, their swords and even a full-size horse in battle garb. Here you'll also find amazing collections of impressionist, abstract expressionist, current works and photography. If it's lunch time, consider the Provenance Restaurant or the Provenance Cafe on the first floor before you leave.

Similar to the Botanical Garden, there are interior and exterior exhibits of interest to all ages. Trace history back to before man was alive and marvel at some of the most important skeletal remains found around the world. Try to count how many species of insects, birds, reptiles and mammals are on display. Explore science, nature and live animals – they are all here to entertain and to educate.

After a full day of sightseeing, L'Albatros is a perfect place to relax. One of Chef Zack Bruell's many restaurants in the area, this place offers an extensive and diverse menu. Set as a traditional brasserie like you might find in France, the restaurant is located in the middle of the Case Western Reserve University campus. Adequate off-street parking is available out front. If it's pleasant outdoors, ask to be seated on the patio; but if it's a little chilly, request a table inside next to the fireplace. In either case, the cuisine is fabulous and one of the cocktails is a great way to end your day in University Circle.
