Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl's Top 5 Green Tomato Recipes

There is officially frost on the pumpkin. At least there was on our pumpkin this morning. Halloween is approaching. It won't be long before you hear holiday music when you go shopping (now it's more than the cold that's making us shiver). What does this all mean? It means the garden tomato season is finished. Done. Kaput. Over! And if your garden is anything like Dara's, there are still lots and lots of green ones to deal with. What to do with them all? Plenty! Here are Dara's Top 5 Green Tomato Recipes!

Fried Green Tomatoes
Recipe

People hear green tomato, they think fried. I always find fried green tomatoes a little more trouble than they are worth, but if you want the perfect recipe, here is the perfect recipe. The buttermilk and seasonings give it that great Southern "twang" that a Fried Greenie should have. Give it a shot!

Grilled Green Tomatoes
Recipe

We're heading south again y'all. This time vinegar is used to give it a little acidity. You marinate slices of big tomatoes in a bit of wine vinegar and sugar, then throw them on the hot grill and voila! Something fun and totally different to put in a salad. Do NOT let a little cooler weather discourage you from firing up the charcoal or gas. Grilling season never ends!

Green Tomato Apple Relish
Recipe

Most green tomato relish recipes use a ton of sugar to combat the tartness of the tomatoes. This one skips that and it's a better, tastier and healthy choice. Spice it up or spice it down depending on how many jalapenos you want. I use half the vinegar this calls for, store it in the fridge, and serve it on grilled chicken brats—that's a very good thing.

Green Tomato Salsa Verde
Recipe

A traditional salsa verde is made with tangy tomatillos, not green tomatoes. But, you can get good flavor using green tomatoes. While the flavor won't be quite as fruity as a tomatillo they will work just as well. And this recipe is easy-peasy. You just going to huck everything into the food processor, dip your chips and move on with your day. Just do not skip the part where you roast them. It really brings out a nice flavor (you could also roast a little garlic as that is a great addition to most salsa verde's). Ole!

Refrigerator Pickle Green Tomatoes
Recipe

My absolute favorite. Tangy, tart, and spicy green tomatoes. Just do this: Throw your green tomatoes in a jar (and cut them if they're gigantic), pour salt brine and your favorite pickling spices over them—I add fresh garlic, always—let them sit in the fridge for a week, voila. Garden problem to table glory, in a week. Make them your own. Experiment with different spices and flavors. You'll be grabbing for them all winter!
