Claim 52 Brewing Opening The Abbey In Springfield
Small, Eugene, Oregon based Claim 52 Brewing is opening a 2nd location in Springfield, OR called The Abbey at the Sprout! Regional Food Hub. The nano-ish sized brewery Claim 52 will still brew in Eugene on their 3.5 bbl system but become the 3rd brewery tasting room/brewpub in Springfield alongside Planktown and the original Hop Valley Brewing.
The Abbey at the Sprout! is in a community building operated by NEDCO that includes the year round farmers market and commercial food kitchen. The new space, which faces 4th Street, is named The Abbey to reflect the historic nature of the building and a focus on European beer styles like Kolsch, weiss beers and Belgian-style ales.
Initial hours will be 4 – 8 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 3 – 9 pm on market days (Fridays) and Saturdays.
The Abbey will feature seven different Claim 52 beers, brewed at its manufacturing facility in West Eugene, as well as a rotating cider and guest brewery. Food offerings will rely heavily on the commercial kitchen users at Sprout!.
Owner Mercy McDonald explains, "We plan to have a few light snacks available from 100 Mile Bakery, like her phenomenal cheese straws, and hope to expand the menu to include other small plates with the help of other commercial kitchen users. The regional food hub facilitates small business collaborations like this, which is one of the many things that made the space attractive to us."
Upcoming Events
The Abbey will be part of this month's second Friday art walk, with works by local artist Dune Erickson on display. Owners are planning a number of special events to showcase other Sprout! vendors and local businesses.
A cider tasting with Reverend Nat's Hard Cider (Portland) and Wildcraft Cider (Eugene) is scheduled for October 16. A dessert and beer pairing is also in the works – a grown-up Halloween party of sorts.
The Abbey's grand opening will coincide with the NEDCO Fall Festival on Friday October 24. In preparation, Claim 52 brewers are teaming up with Planktown to brew up a collaboration beer for the event, aptly named Abbey Ale. The beer will brewed on Planktown's system this week to be ready for the grand opening.
