Children At Risk; Crosswalk Controversy Continues

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Concerned parents want the city of Dallas to fix a crosswalk near Anne Frank Elementary along Verde Valley lane and Noel road that leads to a construction zone. Construction for a new apartment complex is blocking the sidewalk, forcing students to cross on the street rather than the crosswalk.

"It's a little scary as a parent," said parent Vanessa Heath who walks her 5-year-old to school. She thinks it's time for the city to do something that seems simple — paint a new crosswalk. "The cars are really great about stopping at the crosswalks," said Heath. "If there are kids coming or parents coming with their kids they will stop and let you go ahead, but when they just have kids running across the street it is more dangerous."

Often times waiting 30 minutes to cross safely, some children have had some close calls.

"It feels like you are about to get run over," said student Tracy Njuguna. "We almost got hit," said another student, Nsikan Imeh.

According to parents, the City of Dallas said that students not using the crosswalk should get jay walking tickets. A spokesperson said the city is in the process of trying to figure out a safe solution, especially since children are involved.
